Metrics to Identify Project Improvement Opportunities
In the last chapter we discussed Kiviatt Charts and Box & Whisker Plots. These are two tools that can be used to display PD and PP data in our search for process-wide and practice-wide improvement opportunities. This would typically be the starting point for identifying major areas where improvement opportunities should be focused.
Today’s customer-focused, market-driven company cannot afford to miss the fact that many customers prefer environmentally friendly products given a similar cost. We present a novel method to improve word alignment quality and eventually the translation performance by producing and combining complementary word alignments for low-resource languages. Instead of focusing on the improvement of a single set of word alignments, we generate multiple sets of diversiﬁed alignments based on different motivations, such as linguistic knowledge, morphology and heuristics.

We explore how to improve machine translation systems by adding more translation data in situations where we already have substantial resources. The main challenge is how to buck the trend of diminishing returns that is commonly encountered. We present an active learning-style data solicitation algorithm to meet this challenge. We test it, gathering annotations via Amazon Mechanical Turk, and ﬁnd that we get an order of magnitude increase in performance rates of improvement.
We present an NLP system that classifies the assertion type of medical problems in clinical notes used for the Fourth i2b2/VA Challenge. Our classifier uses a variety of linguistic features, including lexical, syntactic, lexicosyntactic, and contextual features. To overcome an extremely unbalanced distribution of assertion types in the data set, we focused our efforts on adding features specifically to improve the performance of minority classes.
In this paper, we propose a novel ranking framework – Co-Feedback Ranking (CoFRank), which allows two base rankers to supervise each other during the ranking process by providing their own ranking results as feedback to the other parties so as to boost the ranking performance. The mutual ranking refinement process continues until the two base rankers cannot learn from each other any more. The overall performance is improved by the enhancement of the base rankers through the mutual learning mechanism.

We propose a global algorithm for learning entailment relations between predicates. We deﬁne a graph structure over predicates that represents entailment relations as directed edges, and use a global transitivity constraint on the graph to learn the optimal set of edges, by formulating the optimization problem as an Integer Linear Program. Is it possible to use sense inventories to improve Web search results diversity for one word queries? To answer this question, we focus on two broad-coverage lexical resources of a different nature: WordNet, as a de-facto standard used in Word Sense Disambiguation experiments; and Wikipedia, as a large coverage, updated encyclopaedic resource which may have a better coverage of relevant senses in Web pages.
In the context of the Document Understanding Conferences, the task of Query-Focused Multi-Document Summarization is intended to improve agreement in content among humangenerated model summaries. Query-focus also aids the automated summarizers in directing the summary at speciﬁc topics, which may result in better agreement with these model summaries. However, while query focus correlates with performance, we show that highperforming automatic systems produce summaries with disproportionally higher query term density than human summarizers do.
