  • This paper compares different bilexical tree-based models for bilingual alignment. EM training for the new model benefits from the dynamic programming “hook trick”. The model produces improved dependency structure for both languages. that we must choose how to lexicalize very carefully to control complexity. In this paper we compare two approaches to lexicalization, both of which incorporate bilexical probabilities.

  • We present a generative distributional model for the unsupervised induction of natural language syntax which explicitly models constituent yields and contexts. Parameter search with EM produces higher quality analyses than previously exhibited by unsupervised systems, giving the best published unsupervised parsing results on the ATIS corpus. Experiments on Penn treebank sentences of comparable length show an even higher F1 of 71% on nontrivial brackets. We compare distributionally induced and actual part-of-speech tags as input data, and examine extensions to the basic model.

  • We present a novel fully unsupervised algorithm for POS induction from plain text, motivated by the cognitive notion of prototypes. The algorithm first identifies landmark clusters of words, serving as the cores of the induced POS categories. The rest of the words are subsequently mapped to these clusters. We utilize morphological and distributional representations computed in a fully unsupervised manner.

  • This paper proposes a novel approach to the induction of Combinatory Categorial Grammars (CCGs) by their potential affinity with the Genetic Algorithms (GAs). Specifically, CCGs utilize a rich yet compact notation for lexical categories, which combine with relatively few grammatical rules, presumed universal. Thus, the search for a CCG consists in large part in a search for the appropriate categories for the data-set’s lexical items. We present and evaluates a system utilizing a simple GA to successively search and improve on such assignments. ...

  • The diversity and specialization in orchid floral morphology have fascinated botanists and collectors for centuries. In the past 10 years, the orchid industry has been growing substantially worldwide. This interesting book focuses on the recent advances in orchid biotechnology research since the last 10 years in Taiwan. To advance the orchid industry, enhancement of basic research as well as advanced biotechnology will provide a good platform to improve the flower quality and breeding of new varieties.

  • To evaluate the immune activation and reactive oxygen species scavenging activity of Cordyceps militaris polysaccharides (CMP) in vivo, 90 male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into six groups. The mice in the three experimental groups were given cyclophosphamide at 80 mg/kg/d via intraperitoneal injection and 17.5, 35, or 70 mg/kg body weight CMP via gavage. The lymphocyte proliferation, phagocytic index, and biochemical parameters were measured.

  • Meeting the demand for the second edition of this book, which is – despite a reprint in 1990 – no longer available, and considering the progress that has been made during the last decade in the study of solvent e¤ects in experimental and theoretical organic chem-istry, this improved third edition is presented to the interested reader. Following the same layout as in the second edition, all topics retained have been brought up to date, with smaller and larger changes and additions on nearly every page. Two Sections (4.4.7 and 5.5.

  • The benefits of nonemergency fund operations are the services that come out of the infrastructure they build, not the income generated during construction for carpenters and bricklayers. In evaluating fund projects, the value added as a result of the extra services coming from the project should be considered. This distinction is relevant for projects that upgrade or replace infrastructure, as op- posed to those that build new infrastructure.

  • Namely, it was shown that if the two goods are complements retailers are able to discriminate between the more informed consumers (the shoppers) and the less informed ones (the captives) by enticing the former with one of the goods on a deep discount while taxing the latter by keeping the overall price tag high. This practice requires that the retailers are able to charge di erent combinations of prices that have a xed sum and yet induce consumers to buy both goods.

  • Overall, Cambodia’s rubber export competitiveness remains weaker than that of other countries in the region, except for the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. One of the problems is that despite the application of conventional technology for the management and maintenance of rubber trees and traditional rubber clones, per- hectare rubber yield remains lower than in other countries of the region.

  • To improve the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), more rapid diagnostic techniques such as antibody detection based on immunochromatographic methods were developed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the SD Rapid TB kit for the diagnosis of active TB with serums from patients and close contact controls in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Findings: We conducted a population-based case-control study. The sera of 60 confirmed TB patients and 60 healthy contacts paired for sex and age were tested.

  • Mehta and Shahpar (2004) present a cost-effectiveness analysis of household air pollution control interventions by WHO regions with significant SFU prevalence. Benefits are healthy years gained from reduced risk of ALRI in children and COPD in adult females and males based on regional data from WHO. An improved stove is assumed to reduce SFU pollution exposure and health effects by 75 percent. Per household annualized cost of cooking systems range across regions from $40-90 for LPG, $10-20 for kerosene, and $3-24 for improved stove ($3-5 in Africa and Asia).

  • At the time of writing, many of the larger retailers are re-engineering their business processes, and they also re-consider their organisation. Due to improvements in infrastructure and logistics (e.g. the just in time principle) as well as information technology advances (e.g. through Electronic Data Interchange; EDI), many retailers are currently centralising their sourcing policies. Table 10 shows recent developments in this respect, while table 11 gives an outlook on current trends and the expected evolution....

  • Most formal modelling in the past has used as a starting point a scenario of 2-3°C warming. In this temperature range, the cost of climate change could be equivalent to a permanent loss of around 0-3% in global world output compared with what could have been achieved in a world without climate change. Developing countries will suffer even higher costs. However, those earlier models were too optimistic about warming: more recent evidence indicates that temperature changes resulting from BAU trends in emissions may exceed 2-3°C by the end of this century.

  • For example, adding an urban highway lane typically accommodates about 2,000 additional daily vehicle trips. 2 Although this reduces congestion on that roadway (at least temporarily, until generated traffic fills the capacity), it often increases “downstream” surface street traffic congestion, increases parking demand, requires travelers to own and operate automobiles, and if additional vehicle travel is induced it increases accidents, energy consumption, pollution and sprawl, all costs that could be reduced if the same trips are made by alternative modes.
