  • Access to safe drinking water and sanitation is a basic necessity. However, such access is highly variable around the world and in particular in Africa, Asia and South America. Much progress still remains to be made in infrastructure improvements and poverty reduction. A recent World Bank report, for example, noted that more than 100 million people in the Latin American region alone lack access to potable water and adequate sanitation systems. Compounding the issue of water availability is contamination of water supplies and the lack of wastewater treatment facilities.

  • As we wrote in a previous preface, there are two main reasons for pro- ducing a new edition of a textbook. First, the subject may have moved on – this has certainly been true in the area of natural resource and envir- onmental economics. Second, experience in using the text may suggest areas for improvement. Both reasons warrant a third edition now. We will say nothing here about the ways in which the subject area has ‘moved on’ except to note that it has and that you will find those changes reflected in this new edition.

  • Significant advances in subsurface containment technology occurred in the 1990s, both with the improvement of the technology and the broader acceptance and applications as a measure for environmental remediation. Since 1995, the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and DuPont have collaborated on a series of organized efforts to advance this technology. In that year, these collaborators sponsored an international expert workshop that led to the publication of the first major book on containment technology.

  • Regulators to date have opted for a relatively "non-interventionist" approach to environmental accounting reform. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, for instance, through surveys and case studies, has identified weaknesses in private sector environmental accounting and promotes the diffusion of accounting "best practices." This outreach- and communication-based approach may be expanded upon in the future, however. There currently are calls from some environmental advocates for more aggressive regulatory actions in this area, such as mandated environmental accounting.

Again, it is easy to see that creating and sustaining competitive advantage is still a matter of “better, cheaper, faster.” The Internet has made customers more informed about every aspect of a product, including its potential environmental harms. Companies that can meet these environmental needs will be the winners.

Our biotic environment provides us with the fundamentals necessary for healthy lives—food, water, oxygen, warmth, light, and fuel. Earth's ecosystems also supply the raw materials for our health-care services. The global fraying of ecosystems has grave implications for our health and our ability to treat illnesses, now and in the future.

  • Soil fertility describes soil nutrient status and the factors controlling the supply of nutrients to plants. Continued efforts to improve soil fertility are required to support the world's growing demand for food, fiber, and renewable fuels. Important ecological services provided by soils, such as biodiversity, buffering capacity, and nutrient recycling benefit from the amendments applied to sustain soil fertility. Those amendments need to be applied in a manner that is both economical and practical for the producer to achieve agronomic objectives that are environmentally sound.

  • There are several reasons that may explain why the prevalence of heart failure is increasing: ageing of the population, the success in prolonging survival in coronary patients, and the success in postponing coronary events by effective prevention in those patients at high risk or those patients who have already survived a first event (secondary prevention) (Senni et al, 1999). Advances in medical therapy have resulted in improved survival in patients with moderate and severe heart failure, but the prognosis for end-stage heart failure patients still remains poor.
