  • Cotton bamboo fiber was prepared by steam explosion or mechanical method. Both methods included treated step in NaOH 1 N solution and the treated time was studied. The parameters of cotton fiber have been studied. The results of morphology and mechanical properties showed that the optimum treated time was 2.5 hours for the explosion-cotton fiber and 2 hours for the mechanical-cotton one.

  • This paper proposes a novel composite kernel for relation extraction. The composite kernel consists of two individual kernels: an entity kernel that allows for entity-related features and a convolution parse tree kernel that models syntactic information of relation examples. The motivation of our method is to fully utilize the nice properties of kernel methods to explore diverse knowledge for relation extraction.

  • This paper describes a compositional semantics for temporal expressions as part of the meaning representation language (MRL) of the JANUS system, a natural language understanding and generation system under joint development by BBN Laboratoires and the Information Sciences Institute. 1 The analysis is based on a higher order intansional logic described in detail in Hinrichs, Ayuso and Scha (1987). Temporal expressions of English are translated into this language as quantifiers over times which bind temporal indices on predicates.

  • The biologic phenotype underlying chronic periodontitis, including the biofilm and the host response, tend to vary among individuals despite a similar clinical diagnostic category (Offenbacher et al. 2007). Consequently, disease screening should ideally be based on clinical determinations and the biologic phenotype (Page and Kornman 1997). Other associated factors include environmental exposures, as well as differences in genetic and possibly epigenetic composition (Page and Kornman 1997).

  • Thus, despite the value of these clinical methods, such techniques often result in inconsistent diagnoses, as well as an inability to reliably predict a patient´s response to treatment (Offenbacher et al. 2007). A reason for the limited success in predicting the future course of disease in some individuals is that the clinical phenotype does not reflect the underlying biologic processes that occur at the biofilm-gingival interface (Offenbacher et al. 2007).

  • The aims of this paper were to investigate the component fatty acids of some freshwater fish species by comparing the levels of essential fatty acids present. The FAME were determined by GC-MS and were identified using retention time locked methods and retention time databases. The fatty acids profiles include minor amounts of odd-number, branched-chain, and even-number fatty acids as well as saturated components, the MUFA and PUFA. The major SFA were C14:0 and C16:0. The C18:1 was the prominent MUFA....

These four themes include: 1) biogeographic theory and tests of concepts and processes; 2) the regional biogeography of individual taxa; 3) historical and contemporary biogeography of complex landscapes; and 4) the evolutionary biogeography of macrotaxa. In the first chapter of the conceptual biogeography section, Khalid Al Mutairi et al.
