  • Medicine is, fortunately, constantly evolving. Imaging diagnosis is no exception. Technical improvements guarantee further developments in diagnosis. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have attained a recognized value in the diagnosis of the heart, which is continuing to increase. For this reason, we have now provided a separate chapter on diagnostic imaging of the heart. We have placed sectional CT images next to MR images of the heart to facilitate classification. We have limited ourselves to scans which are presently recognized as standard.

  • A wealth of information has accumulated on the subject of hypertension, and the number of publications dedicated to topics in this field of study continues to increase. It has become nearly impossible for medical professionals to absorb all of the diverse information and to gather the information into a coherent theoretical concept and practical approach to treating the disease, even for those of us who are actively involved in this research specialty on a daily basis.

  • The perfect cardiac catheterization technique, including good diagnostic and therapeutic qualities, without risk and with no recovery time for the patient, does not exist. Obtaining initial access to the arterial circulation is the first and most frequent catheterization difficulty encountered by the interventional cardiologist during the procedure. Often, it is also the only difficult part of the exam for the patient because it may cause a vagal reaction or painful spasm.

  • Acute haematogenous osteomyelitis refers to infection of bone resulting from bacteria in the bloodstream. This is seen most often in children, with initial infection thought to occur in the richly vascularised metaphyseal region (Gutierrez, 2005). Children are thought to experience frequent episodes of bacteraemia, often with no apparent symptoms, leading to seeding and development of osteomyelitis (Conrad, 2010). The pathogenesis of this process has been theoretically described.

  • I am grateful to the publishers for the invitation to produce a second edition of Applied Basic Science for Basic Surgical Training. Despite the considerable changes to education and examination, the requirement of any future surgeon to possess a comprehensive knowledge of the applied basic sciences remains the core of surgical training; a fact that is universally acknowledged by the organisations most closely involved in the shaping of the surgical curriculum.

  • Cerebrovascular diseases have an enormous and increasing impact on societies: they rank among the leading causes of death, are often associated with chronic handicap, and cause high costs for primary treatment, rehabilitation and chronic care. The advent of treatment options such as reperfusion therapies and, to a lesser degree, neuroprotective strategies on the one hand, and growing means to enhance rehabilitation and functional plasticity on the other hand, urges physicians to diagnose stroke subtypes as early and precisely as possible.

  • We have been able to develop 23 Regional Cancer Centres and several Oncology Wings in India, which provide comprehensive cancer care services. One of the major limitations of the programme is the late stage at presentation of common cancers thus reducing the chances of survival. There is a need to increase awareness among the community regarding prevention and early detection of cancers. The programme is developing IEC materials for the same.

  • Stroke is a vascular disease for which mortality and morbidity are relatively well-documented because most stroke victims are admitted to hospitals. Trends in stroke mortality, incidence, and prevalence are somewhat similar to those for other cardiovascular conditions. Stroke mortality has been decreasing since the 1960s, but without a consistent decrease in stroke incidence. Stroke incidence has even been reported to have been higher in the 1980s than during the 1970s, and there was no sustained decline in incidence during the 1990s....

  • In the long-term perspective, success in achieving both consumer benefits and increasing competitiveness depends on the quality of basic research. In often highly specialised areas, research co-operation between scientists in different member states is of utmost importance to achieve and maintain a high level of quality. Within EU research activities, the transnational nature of research should hence be dealt with by combining complementary expertise in different countries, also leading to increased research productivity through economies of scale....

  • As a result of adaptation to desert conditions, camels acquire the ability to produce diluted milk. This involves the production of milk with a higher water content when the animal is dehydrated than when it is fully watered. They do this by withdrawing water preferentially from the intestines under the action of prolactin and oxytocin. The ability to dilute milk under similar conditions of water stress has also been demonstrated in women and in cows. Milk dilution is not known in other mammals.

  • The skin is the largest organ of the body and its main function is to protect the organism against undesirable effects of the environment. The skin is composed of three different layers: epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The epidermis contains the stratum corneum, the uppermost layer of the epidermis, that acts as the barrier function of the skin due to its very high density and its low hydration. The dermis is an extensive vascular network providing skin nutrition, repair, thermal regulation and immune response.

  • There are three problems with the above set of reasonings. First, conventional indices of the standard of living pertain to commodity production, not to the natural-resource base onwhich production depends. Statistics on pastmovements ofworld (or regional) income and agricultural production say nothing about this base. They don’t say if increases in GNP per head in a country aren’t being realized by means of a depletion of natural capital (e.g., ecosystem functioning).
