  • The conquest of Canada was an event of momentous consequence in American history. It changed the political aspect of the continent, prepared a way for the independence of the British colonies, rescued the vast tracts of the interior from the rule of military despotism, and gave them, eventually, to the keeping of an ordered democracy. Yet to the red natives of the soil its results were wholly disastrous. Could the French have maintained their ground, the ruin of the Indian tribes might long have been postponed; but the victory of Quebec was the signal of their swift decline.

  • Our planet’s atmosphere is thought to have changed gradually and over a very wide range of CO2 concentrations throughout history. From ancient atmospheric gases trapped in ice bubbles, we have strong evidence indicating that atmospheric CO2 values reached minimum concentrations of approximately 180 parts per million during the Last Glacial Maximum, which was only 15,000 years ago. At the other extreme, calculations suggest that some 500 million years ago the atmospheric CO2 concentrations may have been about 4000 to 5000 parts per million....

  • So far limit values for pollutants in sewage sludge or soils were based on background concentrations and set with the explicit political intention to avoid adverse effects. It will never be possible to derive limit values solely from scientific research. Limiting pollution so far always resulted in improvements of the environmental situation. Accordingly the continuing development of regulations is a very important matter, especially when regarded from an integrative point of view. The study tries to contribute to this attempt.

It gives an overview of the occurrence of these organic compounds in sewage sludge, basic toxicological data, a review on persistence of organic contaminants in soils and risk assessments for the various pathways. The attempt was made to identifiy additional substances or substance groups which might cause hazards and should be regulated. Thus it is recommendended that the benzo(a)pyrene concentration in soil is regulated.

  • Coastal Ecosystems. Africa has three coastlines—along the Mediterranean Sea in the north, the Atlantic Ocean in the west, and the Indian Ocean in the east. These shores consist of stretches of sand, soil, or rock. In general, plants and animals on Africa’s western coast are less varied and numerous than on the eastern coast. The coastal environments of Africa include coral reef, lagoon, mangrove, salt marsh, and seagrass ecosystems.
