successive eras of cell and molecular biology, several omics (proteomics, genomics)
and now into molecular mapping and personalized medicine.
In its bearing on modern life and modern business, the "machine process" means something more
comprehensive and less external than a mere aggregate of mechanical appliances for the mediation of human
labor. It means that, but it means something more than that. The civil engineer, the mechanical engineer, the
navigator, the mining expert, the industrial chemist and mineralogist, the electrician, −− the work of all these
falls within the lines of the modern machine process, as well as the work of the inventor who devises the

The universities must develop new fields of multi-discipline research in

turn to many aspects of daily life, including
the way many of us do our jobs.
There are a number of viewpoints about the most likely direction of travel but it is clear that the best
interests of the industry will be met through the re-letting process proceeding according to
published schedules, as the DfT is doing, so that the commercial negotiations on new build versus
continuous operation can take place as quickly as possible.
Linux has come a long way in a short time. Computing itself is still relatively young by any
standard; if the era of modern computing started with the invention of the microchip, it’s still
less than 50 years old. But Linux is a youngster compared even to this; it has been around for
only 15 of those years.
In that brief time span, a student’s personal project has grown to where it now runs many
computers throughout the world.
