Paul Graham (Hackers and Painters) has mentioned that an important read for preparing to start your own business is How To Win Friends and Influence People. I'm happy to report that this gem from 1936 is timeless and truly life-changing. I believe Paul's reasons for the recommendation include: the importance of charisma, general rounding out one's personality, and finding ways to get responsiveness from people by making them feel good.
This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing...

The influence of temperature and the type of expander on the cycle life of negative lead±acid battery plates set to cycling tests following the requirements of the ECE-15 test protocol has been investigated. The plates prepared with the currently used expanders Vanisperse (Vs) or Indulin (In) alone have a considerably shorter cycle life than negative plates produced with a blend of the two expanders.
The estimates of the regression parameters are influenced by a few extreme observations. The
residual plot may let us pick out, which the individual data points are high or low. We may use the
residual plot to find the outlier, which are inadequately captured by the regression model itself.
FACTORS INFLUENCING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS IN THAI PRIVATE HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS This idea forms the basis of my empirical strategy. In essence, I compare the sorting
parameter θ * in equation (3) across metropolitan housing markets with greater and lesser
degrees of residential school choice. Let θ =θ(c,δ)= E[θ *|c,δ] be the average
effectiveness sorting of markets characterized by the parameters c and δ , where c is the
degree of jurisdictional competition (i.e.
ore and more consumers are looking for health benefits associated with their food or drink product; these concerns range from the effects of probiotics, the health benefits associated with a meat-reduction diet to the role of antioxidants in ageing and skincare. Interorganizational Relationships and Information Services: How Technical and Institutional Environments Influence Data Gathering Practices The moderate δ case is the most interesting. Here, we observe more perfect
sorting on μ and therefore larger slopes of μ with respect to x j when there are many
districts than when there are few. That is, ∂ 0

This research shows the influence of pile cap on bearing capacity of pile foundation, especially pile groups of shaft resistance. Using PLAXIS-3D FOUNDATION sofware to simulate a actual application with 4 piles in groups and assumption for 7 stiffness modulus of soil under pile cap. The output calculation expresses that in both the cap and the pile carrying the load. The cap is necessary to spread the vertical and horizontal loads and any overturning moments to all the piles in group and transfer load to soil underneath.
We have developed a system that generates evaluative arguments that are tailored to the user, properly arranged and concise. We have also developed an evaluation framework in which the effectiveness of evaluative arguments can be measured with real users. This paper presents the results of a formal experiment we have performed in our framework to verify the influence of argument conciseness on argument effectiveness In the remainder of the paper, we first describe a computational framework for generating evaluative arguments at different levels of conciseness. ...

The relevance of context in disambiguating natural language input has been widely acknowledged in the literature. However, most attempts at formalising the intuitive notion of context tend to treat the word and its context symmetrically. We demonstrate here that traditional measures such as mutual information score are likely to overlook a significant fraction of all co-occurrence phenomena in natural language. We also propose metrics for measuring directed lexical influence and compare performances.

In many areas where U.S. forces are deployed, the use of military power must take place in close coordination and cooperation with non-military instruments of power and influence. There is a clear need for new approaches to this situation on the part of the U.S. government
The most available standard relation is the one most frequently used to interpret other compounds containing that same modifier. For instance, the modifier “mountain” is most often associated with the relation thus making the combination “mountain stream” easier to interpret than “mountain magazine” which uses the relation. Important evidence in support of the CARIN model is the finding that the modifier’s relational distribution influences the ease with which a combined concept can be interpreted. ...
