  • We use multiple views for cross-domain document classification. The main idea is to strengthen the views’ consistency for target data with source training data by identifying the correlations of domain-specific features from different domains. We present an Information-theoretic Multi-view Adaptation Model (IMAM) based on a multi-way clustering scheme, where word and link clusters can draw together seemingly unrelated domain-specific features from both sides and iteratively boost the consistency between document clusterings based on word and link views. ...

  • Recently, there has been a rise of interest in unsupervised detection of highlevel semantic relations involving complex units, such as phrases and whole sentences. Typically such approaches are faced with two main obstacles: data sparseness and correctly generalizing from the examples. In this work, we describe the Clustered Clause representation, which utilizes information-based clustering and inter-sentence dependencies to create a simplified and generalized representation of the grammatical clause. ...

  • Up to this point we have seen: Classical Crypto Symmetric Crypto Asymmetric Crypto These systems have focused on issues of confidentiality: Ensuring that an adversary cannot infer the original plaintext message, or cannot learn any information about the original plaintext from the ciphertext. In today’s lecture we will put a more formal framework around the notion of what information is, and use this to provide a definition of security from an information-theoretic point of view.

  • Looking up ‘‘aquatic food web’’ on Google provides a dizzying array of eclectic sites and information (and disinformation!) to choose from. However, even within this morass it is clear that aquatic food-web research has expanded greatly over the last couple of decades, and includes a wide array of studies from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. This book attempts to bring together and synthesize some of the most recent perspectives on aquatic food-web research, with a particular emphasis on integrating that knowledge within an ecosystem framework....

  • Information Theory is one of the few scientific fields fortunate enough to have an identifiable beginning - Claude Shannon's 1948 paper. The story of the evolution of how it progressed from a single theoretical paper to a broad field that has redefined our world is a fascinating one. It provides the opportunity to study the social, political, and technological interactions that have helped guide its development and define its trajectory, and gives us insight into how a new field evolves. We often hear Claude Shannon called the father of the Digital Age.

  • As information extraction (IE) becomes more central to enterprise applications, rule-based IE engines have become increasingly important. In this paper, we describe SystemT, a rule-based IE system whose basic design removes the expressivity and performance limitations of current systems based on cascading grammars. SystemT uses a declarative rule language, AQL, and an optimizer that generates high-performance algebraic execution plans for AQL rules. We compare SystemT’s approach against cascading grammars, both theoretically and with a thorough experimental evaluation. ...

  • Model-theoretic semantics provides a computationally attractive means of representing the semantics of natural language. However, the models used in this formalism are static and are usually infinite. Dynamic models are incomplete models that include only the information needed for an application and to which information can be added. Dynamic models are basically approximations of larger conventional models, but differ is several interesting ways. The difference discussed here is the possibility of inconsistent information being included in the model. ...

  • In Vietnam, after the conversion from the command economy to market economy, the local enterprises faced many difficulties in strategic management. Businesses need to research, develop a strategic tool to have enough flexibility to respond to market changes. A business strategy must be formulated on the basis of analysis and forecast opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses of the enterprise, helping businesses obtain general information about the external and internal business environment. Viettel Group is one successful model of change to the market economy.

  • Decision support systems (DSS) have evolved over the past four decades from theoretical concepts into real world computerized applications. DSS architecture contains three key components: a knowledge base, a computerized model, and a user interface. DSS simulate cognitive decision-making functions of humans based on artificial intelligence methodologies (including expert systems, data mining, machine learning, connectionism, logistical reasoning, etc.) in order to perform decision support functions.

  • Evolutionary computation has been widely used in computer science for decades. Even though it started as far back as the 1960s with simulated evolution, the subject is still evolving. During this time, new metaheuristic optimization approaches, like evolutionary algorithms, genetic algorithms, swarm intelligence, etc., were being developed and new fields of usage in artificial intelligence, machine learning, combinatorial and numerical optimization, etc., were being explored.
