  • We address two problems in the field of automatic optimization of dialogue strategies: learning effective dialogue strategies when no initial data or system exists, and evaluating the result with real users. We use Reinforcement Learning (RL) to learn multimodal dialogue strategies by interaction with a simulated environment which is “bootstrapped” from small amounts of Wizard-of-Oz (WOZ) data.

  • The Data-Link layer is the protocol layer in a program that handles the moving of data in and out across a physical link in a network. The Data-Link layer is layer 2 in the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) model for a set of telecommunication protocols. The Data-Link layer ensures that an initial connection has been set up, divides output data into data frames, and handles the acknowledgements from a receiver that the data arrived successfully. It also ensures that incoming data has been received successfully by analyzing bit patterns at special places in the frames....

  • A variable declared with the const modifier cannot have its value changed during the execution of your program. Thus, a const “variable” isn’t really variable! You can give a variable declared as const an initial value, however. For example, const int max_users = 9; creates an int variable called max_users that contains the value 9. This variable can be used in expressions like any other variable, but its value cannot be modified by your program.

  • In shared-nothing database systems, data often needs to be moved whenever there is a join or an aggregation process for which the data requires repartitioning across the segments. As a result, the interconnect serves as one of the most critical components within Greenplum Database. Greenplum’s gNet interconnect (Figure 8m) optimizes the flow of data to allow continuous pipelining of processing without blocking on all nodes of the system.

  • Conversation between two people is usually of MIXED-INITIATIVE, with CONTROL over the conversation being transferred from one person to another. We apply a set of rules for the transfer of control to 4 sets of dialogues consisting of a total of 1862 turns. The application of the control rules lets us derive domain-independent discourse structures. The derived structures indicate that initiative plays a role in the structuring of discourse.

  • Academic and policy interest in the U.S. welfare system has increased dramatically over the past 15 years, an interest that has accelerated and is currently at an all-time high. Beginning in the late 1980s with welfare reform initiatives in a few states around the country and continuing in the first half of the 1990s as more states made changes in their income support programs, welfare reform culminated at the federal level with the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) in 1996.

  • We initiate a study comparing effectiveness of the transformed spaces learned by recently proposed supervised, and semisupervised metric learning algorithms to those generated by previously proposed unsupervised dimensionality reduction methods (e.g., PCA). Through a variety of experiments on different realworld datasets, we find IDML-IT, a semisupervised metric learning algorithm to be the most effective.

  • We present a prototype natural-language problem-solving application for a financial services call center, developed as part of the Amitiés multilingual human-computer dialogue project. Our automated dialogue system, based on empirical evidence from real call-center conversations, features a datadriven approach that allows for mixed system/customer initiative and spontaneous conversation. Preliminary evaluation results indicate efficient dialogues and high user satisfaction, with performance comparable to or better than that of current conversational travel information systems. ...

  • In this paper, we compare the performance of a state-of-the-art statistical parser (Bikel, 2004) in parsing written and spoken language and in generating subcategorization cues from written and spoken language. Although Bikel’s parser achieves a higher accuracy for parsing written language, it achieves a higher accuracy when extracting subcategorization cues from spoken language. Our experiments also show that current technology for extracting subcategorization frames initially designed for written texts works equally well for spoken language. ...

  • A PLC or programmable controller is a computer based solid state device that controls industrial equipment and processes. Initially designed to perform the logic functions executed by relays, drum switches and mechanical timer/counters, it has been extended to analog control as well. A typical PLC system consists of a processor and an input/output system all mounted in a rack like system. The PLC system is a cost effective solution for applications with a high ratio of digital to analog points in a system.
