  • To derive our empirical results, we obtain a sample of equity SRI funds from the Social Investment Forum for the period 1997-2005 and merge this sample with the CRSP Survivor Bias Free US Mutual Fund Database. Our results indicate that the SRI constraint does not reduce funds' before-fee performance, measured using the four-factor alpha of Carhart (1997). On the contrary, SRI funds outperform comparable conventional funds by a substantial 0.96% to 1.83% per year before expenses.

Soon after joining the company I was assigned to design a demo prototype for the digital telephone answering device project. Initially I was in charge of hardware including circuit design and printed circuit board layout. The core of the board consisted of a microcontroller sending commands to a mixed signal processor, where all the signal processing tasks— including speech coding—were performed.

  • The data allow us to focus on eight basic questions about the microfinance “industry”: Who are the lenders? How widespread is profitability? Are loans in fact repaid at the high rates advertised? Who are the customers? Why are interest rates so high? Are profits high enough to attract profit-maximizing investors? How important are subsidies? How robust are the financial data? The answers then take us back to reconsider the initial questions of subsidy, profit, and social impact in microfinance. Who are the lenders? The clash between Grameen Bank and...

  • Legislative packaging and vehicles must, of course, be decided by Leadership, but we are generally skeptical of large, “comprehensive” bills on complex topics, at least as the bills are being written. Individual bills could, of course, be packaged together at some point later in the legislative process. With the current fiscally constrained environment, any new or expanded programs and initiatives need to reflect fiscal realities. We must keep in mind the potential fiscal impact on both the public and private sectors. ...

The final distance category captures the significant increase in spending due to overlap with the next payday.13 To further verify that our baseline results are not driven by our parameterization of the distance measure, we regress log expenditure on separate dummy variables for each starting distance from payday.

  • Until 2007, information on Indian corporate bond market turnover was incomplete and largely anecdotal. In 2007, however, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) launched initiatives to ensure more comprehensive reporting of the over-the-counter (OTC) bond market (Figure 8). Current volumes are running at low levels—around 140 transactions amounting to about USD80 million per day. But corporate bond markets worldwide are typically illiquid, 5 so it may be overly optimistic to expect India to develop a uniquely liquid corporate bond market.

Because our sample is restricted to “natives” (whom we also refer to as “nonmovers”), the individual fixed effects also con- trol for time-invariant community characteristics such as the average level of financial sophistication of a community over the sample period.

I cannot imagine dry and dull ESL/EFL grammar classes. • 578 Making Key Strategic Decisions Tax Savings Corporations in the U.S. pay billions each year in corporate income taxes. M&A activity may create tax savings that would not be possible absent the transaction. While acquisitions made solely to reduce taxes would be disallowed, substantial value may result from tax savings in deals initiated for valid business purposes. We consider the following three ways that tax incentives may motivate acquisition activity: 1. Unused operating losses. 2. Excess debt capacity. 3. Disposition of excess cash.
