Based on in-depth case studies of individual reforms in health care, pensions, and unemployment insurance since the early 1990s, Stiller illuminates the ways in which Germany has made the transition from its Bismarckian past to a hybrid welfare state....

  • The excuse for writing another history of the Reformation is the need for putting that movement in its proper relations to the economic and intellectual revolutions of the sixteenth century. The labor of love necessary for the accomplishment of this task has employed most of my leisure for the last six years and has been my companion through vicissitudes of sorrow and of joy. A large part of the pleasure derived from the task has come from association with friends who have generously put their time and thought at my disposal....

To this end, we document changes in the empirically observable “institutional environment,” exploring changes in rice and other crop prices as well as fertilizer prices.

The integration was organized in the form of Vertical Track which implies a successive development of groups comprising children between six and twelve years old, pre-school teachers, recreation pedagogues, and schoolteachers. The integration was prompted by state governed reforms such as the 1992 law allowing six-year olds to start compulsory school.

  • The imagination is questionable (Daily, 1997; Dasgupta, 2000b). In any event, we should be sceptical of a theory which places such enormous burden on an experience not much more than two hundred years old (Fogel, 1994; Johnson, 2000). Extrapolation into the past is a sobering exercise: over the long haul of history (some five thousand years), economic growth even in the currently-rich countries was for most of the time not much above zero.

  • The objective of this chapter is to discuss recent developments in the literature that studies how the dynamics of earnings and wages affect consumption choices over the life cycle. Labor economists and macroeconomists are the main contributors to this area of research. A theme of interest for both labor economics and macroeconomics is to understand how much risk households face, to what extent risk affects basic household choices such as consumption, labor supply and human capital investments, and what types of risks matter in explaining behavior.

Sometimes those responsible may be in the community, sometimes they may be a private contractor, or sometimes they may be in the ministry. User training is needed, par- ticularly in water supply and sanitation. Sanitation education has not always been provided and is very important. If the operator is going to be the sectoral agency, sometimes basic budgetary reforms need to be addressed.

  • The ultimate responsibility for prudential standard-setting and supervision for Tier 1 FHCs must rest with a single regulator. The public has a right to expect that a clearly identifiable entity, not a committee of multiple agencies, will be answerable for setting standards that will protect the financial system and the public from risks posed by the potential failure of Tier 1 FHCs.

Unlike many critics, Professor Armentano carries the logic of his analysis to the fullest possible extent: "My position on antitrust has never been ambiguous," he writes. "All of the antitrust laws and all of the enforcement agency authority should be summarily repealed. The antitrust apparatus cannot be reformed; it must be abolished." Professor Armentano begins with the most rigorous and revealing account of the Microsoft antitrust battle t...

Employers had wide latitude to fire workers tempo- rarily unable to work because of illnesses or injuries. Employers could legally fire women who needed time off for pregnancy and childbirth if they also denied time off to nonpregnant employees who were unable to work.

  • Bulgaria’s difficult transition from plan to market was marked by persistent macroeconomic and financial instability leading to a major economic collapse in 1996-1997. In 1997 a currency board arrangement (CBA) was established as a “policy of last resort” with the aim to impose fiscal and financial discipline. The change in the monetary regime was accompanied by a comprehensive package of policy reforms affecting not only the macroeconomic but also the institutional environment and the functioning of the financial system.
