  • BMW first introduced Park Distance Control (PDC) on the 7 series (E32) in 1992. PDC is a driver assistance system that facilitates parking and manoeuvring in confined spaces. The rear area of the vehicle is monitored by four ultrasonic transducers that are integrated into the rear bumper. On some vehicles, the front area of the vehicle is also monitored by four additional ultrasonic transducers in the front bumper. Ultrasonics is the term used to describe sound above the human hearing range at frequencies between 20 kHz and 1000 MHz.

  • The automotive industry is currently developing sensor-based solutions to increase vehicle safety in speed zones where driver error is most common: at lower speeds, when the driver is stuck in traffic, and at higher speeds, when the driver is cruising on a long stretch of highway (see Figure 3). These systems, known as Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), use a combination of advanced sensors, such as stereo cameras and long- and short-range RADAR, combined with actuators, control units, and integrating software, to enable cars to monitor and respond to their surroundings.

  • The Mobile Detection Assessment and Response System, Exterior (MDARS-E) provides an automated robotic security capability for storage yards, petroleum tank farms, rail yards, and arsenals. The system includes multiple supervised-autonomous platforms equipped with intrusion detection, barrier assessment, and inventory assessment subsystems commanded from an integrated control station. The MDARS-E Intrusion Detection System consists of a motion sensor suite which is selectively enabled while the vehicle is momentarily halted in execution of pre-defined but randomly executed patrols.
