  • State-of-the-art computer-assisted translation engines are based on a statistical prediction engine, which interactively provides completions to what a human translator types. The integration of human speech into a computer-assisted system is also a challenging area and is the aim of this paper. So far, only a few methods for integrating statistical machine translation (MT) models with automatic speech recognition (ASR) models have been studied. They were mainly based on N best rescoring approach. ...

  • In this paper, with a belief that a language model that embraces a larger context provides better prediction ability, we present two extensions to standard n-gram language models in statistical machine translation: a backward language model that augments the conventional forward language model, and a mutual information trigger model which captures long-distance dependencies that go beyond the scope of standard n-gram language models.

  • Recent research presents conflicting evidence on whether word sense disambiguation (WSD) systems can help to improve the performance of statistical machine translation (MT) systems. In this paper, we successfully integrate a state-of-the-art WSD system into a state-of-the-art hierarchical phrase-based MT system, Hiero. We show for the first time that integrating a WSD system improves the performance of a state-ofthe-art statistical MT system on an actual translation task. Furthermore, the improvement is statistically significant. ...

  • Until quite recently, extending Phrase-based Statistical Machine Translation (PBSMT) with syntactic structure caused system performance to deteriorate. In this work we show that incorporating lexical syntactic descriptions in the form of supertags can yield significantly better PBSMT systems. We describe a novel PBSMT model that integrates supertags into the target language model and the target side of the translation model. Two kinds of supertags are employed: those from Lexicalized Tree-Adjoining Grammar and Combinatory Categorial Grammar.

  • This paper presents a novel statistical model for automatic identification of English baseNP. It uses two steps: the Nbest Part-Of-Speech (POS) tagging and baseNP identification given the N-best POS-sequences. Unlike the other approaches where the two steps are separated, we integrate them into a unified statistical framework. Our model also integrates lexical information. Finally, Viterbi algorithm is applied to make global search in the entire sentence, allowing us to obtain linear complexity for the entire process. ...

  • This paper describes a new efficient speech act type tagging system. This system covers the tasks of (1) segmenting a turn into the optimal number of speech act units (SA units), and (2) assigning a speech act type tag (SA tag) to each SA unit. Our method is based on a theoretically clear statistical model that integrates linguistic, acoustic and situational information. We report tagging experiments on Japanese and English dialogue corpora manually labeled with SA tags.

  • Since they cluster terms through statistical measures of context similarities, these tools exploit recurring situations. Since single-word terms denote broader concepts than multi-word terms, they appear more frequently in corpora and are therefore more appropriate for statistical clustering. The contribution of this paper is to propose an integrated platform for computer-aided term extraction and structuring that results from the combination of LEXTER, a Term Extraction tool (Bouriganlt et al., 1996), and FASTR 1, a Term Normalization tool (Jacquemin et al., 1997). ...

  • We describe a formal framework for interpretation of words and compounds in a discourse context which integrates a symbolic lexicon/grammar, word-sense probabilities, and a pragmatic component. The approach is motivated by the need to handle productive word use. In this paper, we concentrate on compound nominals. We discuss the inadequacies of approaches which consider compound interpretation as either wholly lexico-grammatical or wholly pragmatic, and provide an alternative integrated account. ...

  • We describe Akamon, an open source toolkit for tree and forest-based statistical machine translation (Liu et al., 2006; Mi et al., 2008; Mi and Huang, 2008). Akamon implements all of the algorithms required for tree/forestto-string decoding using tree-to-string translation rules: multiple-thread forest-based decoding, n-gram language model integration, beam- and cube-pruning, k-best hypotheses extraction, and minimum error rate training.

  • Recently, various synchronous grammars are proposed for syntax-based machine translation, e.g. synchronous context-free grammar and synchronous tree (sequence) substitution grammar, either purely formal or linguistically motivated. Aiming at combining the strengths of different grammars, we describes a synthetic synchronous grammar (SSG), which tentatively in this paper, integrates a synchronous context-free grammar (SCFG) and a synchronous tree sequence substitution grammar (STSSG) for statistical machine translation.

  • In this paper, we propose forest-to-string rules to enhance the expressive power of tree-to-string translation models. A forestto-string rule is capable of capturing nonsyntactic phrase pairs by describing the correspondence between multiple parse trees and one string. To integrate these rules into tree-to-string translation models, auxiliary rules are introduced to provide a generalization level.

  • We present a natural language interface system which is based entirely on trained statistical models. The system consists of three stages of processing: parsing, semantic interpretation, and discourse. Each of these stages is modeled as a statistical process. The models are fully integrated, resulting in an end-to-end system that maps input utterances into meaning representation frames.

  • Managers always want to do something to improve how their organizations function. The combined effects of global competition, the growth in business books and magazines, and business consultancy has led to a never-ending se- ries of fads to fix organizations. It often seems that these do more to confuse than inform people, leading to one change program after another, what the peo- ple at Harley-Davidson dubbed many years ago, “AFP,” Another Fine Program (often translated differently internally). ...
