  • In our many years in the interactive industry, we’ve witnessed more than a few projects become train wrecks. It’s happened in large and small advertising agencies, software companies, and digital agencies alike. Most of these wrecks could have been avoided. In nearly every case, the problem was that nothing held the team together, which led to clashes between stakeholders. We’ve seen the client-side project manager who was rela-tively isolated try to manage the marketing and IT departments.

  • PDF--to most of the world it stands for that rather tiresome format used for documents downloaded from the web. Slow to load and slower to print, hopelessly unsearchable, and all but impossible to cut and paste from, the Portable Document Format doesn't inspire much affection in the average user. But PDFs done right is another story. Those who know the ins and outs of this format know that it can be much more than electronic paper. Flexible, compact, interactive, and even searchable, PDF is the ideal way to present content across multiple platforms....

  • Lipases (triacylglycerol acylhydrolases, E.C. 3.1.1.3) are ubiquitous enzymes of consid- erable physiological significance and industrial potential. Lipases catalyze the hydrolysis of triacylglycerols to glycerol and free fatty acids. In contrast to esterases, lipases are activated only when adsorbed to an oil–water interface (Martinelle et al., 1995) and do not hydrolyze dissolved substrates in the bulk fluid. A true lipase will split emulsified esters of glycerine and long-chain fatty acids such as triolein and tripalmitin. Lipases are serine hydrolases.

  • The Red River Delta (hereafter as RRD) is one of the two biggest deltas in Vietnam with the population is 19,625 million persons in 2009. It is also the most populous area with the population density of 932 person/km2 in 2009 (General Statistics Office, 2010). Tien Hai District of Thai Binh Province locates in the eastern part of the RRD, lies in the coastal zone - a sensitive area and affected by the interaction between the mainland and the South China Sea (in Vietnamese as Biển Đông - East Sea). The study area of this research is Van Truong...

  • This paper addresses the innovation dynamics induced by environmental policy in the pulp and paper industry. There has been a fair amount on technical change in the pulp and paper industry in the recent past and there are still plenty of options for improve- ment. Innovation and diffusion of new technologies have occurred with respect to end- of-pipe abatement, on processes and the product (paper) itself. The main drivers for in- novation in the pulp and paper industry are competition and market demands, but envi- ronmental policies have also played a role.

  • Topic models have been used extensively as a tool for corpus exploration, and a cottage industry has developed to tweak topic models to better encode human intuitions or to better model data. However, creating such extensions requires expertise in machine learning unavailable to potential end-users of topic modeling software. In this work, we develop a framework for allowing users to iteratively refine the topics discovered by models such as latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) by adding constraints that enforce that sets of words must appear together in the same topic. ...

  • This tutorial is about the evolution of speech technology from research to a mature industry. Today, spoken language communication with computers is becoming part of everyday life. Thousands of interactive applications using spoken language technology— known also as “conversational machines”—are only phone calls away, allowing millions of users each day to access information, perform transactions, and get help. Speech recognition, language understanding, text-to-speech synthesis, machine learning, and dialog management enabled this revolution after more than 50 years of research.

  • The biological changes underlying the transition process from gingival health to early inflammatory changes involve local increase in vascular permeability, edema and the recruitment and activation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) (Delima and Van Dyke 2003). Acquired immune response becomes involved once antigen-presenting cells interact with immunocompetent cells, such as T and B lymphocytes, leading to the expansion of antibody-secreting plasma cells and the development of the chronic lesion (Gemmell and Seymour 2004).

  • The use of acoustic energy in food or bioprocessing operations is a relatively new endeavor if compared with other sources of energy, such as mechanical or thermal, which have been utilized for centuries in various applications. There are two important factors that make the current ultrasound-assisted processes possible. One is related with the development in ultrasound generation technology and the other one is the better understanding of interactions between acoustic energy and liquid media, enabling the development of important guidelines for ultrasound-based processes....

  • Recent advents in laser technology and discoveries in laser physics have enabled their very new and exciting applications. Some of them cover production of new materials: nano-particles, periodic structures in nano-scale, and thin films. Others allowed better understanding of laser-matter interaction when sample is subjected to intense laser pulses of various time duration, shape in space and time domains as well as different spectral components contained in a pulse.

  • Microbial biomass formation on root surfaces can be measured in plants growing in solution with or without an inert solid support. Carbon flow to the biomass can be measured by growing plants in solution or soil on a continuous source of 14C02 and the expected biomass formation predicted. The lack of correlation between measured and predicted biomass can be explained by oligotrophic growth of the micro-organisms.

  • Validation of Communications Systems with SDL provides a clear practical guide to validating, by simulation, a telecom system modelled in SDL. SDL, the Specification and Description Language standardised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T), is used to specify and develop complex systems such as GSM, GPRS, UMTS, IEEE 802.11 or Hiperlan. Since the downturn in the telecom industry, validating a system before its implementation has become mandatory to reduce costs.

  • Nucleate pool boiling is a daily phenomenon transferring effectively high heat flux. It is, however, a very complex and illusive process because of the interrelation of numerous factors and effects as the nucleate process, the growth of the bubbles, the interaction between the heater’s surface with liquid and vapor, the evaporation process at the liquidvapor interface, and the transport process of vapour and hot liquid away from the heater’s surface.
