  • Validation of Communications Systems with SDL provides a clear practical guide to validating, by simulation, a telecom system modelled in SDL. SDL, the Specification and Description Language standardised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T), is used to specify and develop complex systems such as GSM, GPRS, UMTS, IEEE 802.11 or Hiperlan. Since the downturn in the telecom industry, validating a system before its implementation has become mandatory to reduce costs.

  • We describe in this chapter how to create an interactive simulation in Java using Easy Java Simulations (Ejs for short). In order to get a general perspective of the complete process, we will inspect, run and finally modify, slightly but meaningfully, an already existing simulation. This will help us identify the parts that make a simulation, as well as become acquainted with our authoring tool.

  • I have my students to thank for this book. Regardless of ability, each has had a role to play. The more able students have always helped, through their project work, to develop new ideas and solutions in electronic design. Some have displayed an astonishing instinctive understanding of engineering ideas, and some have been so keen to learn as to make teaching easy and rewarding. There is never enough time to give each individual student the time and help they deserve.

  • The proposed book contains a lot of recent research devoted to numerical simulations of physical and engineering systems. It can be treated as a bridge linking various numerical approaches of two closely inter-related branches of science, i.e. physics and engineering. Since the numerical simulations play a key role in both theoretical and application-oriented research, professional reference books are highly required by pure research scientists, applied mathematicians, engineers as well post- graduate students....

  • It is often said that computers are revolutionizing science and engineering. By using computers we are able to construct complex engineering designs such as space shuttles. We are able to compute the properties of the universe as it was fractions of a second after the big bang. Our ambitions are ever-increasing. We want to create even more complex designs such as better spaceships, cars, medicines, computerized cellular phone systems, and the like. We want to understand deeper aspects of nature. These are just a few examples of computer-supported modeling and simulation.

  • In this paper we build user simulations of older and younger adults using a corpus of interactions with a Wizard-of-Oz appointment scheduling system. We measure the quality of these models with standard metrics proposed in the literature. Our results agree with predictions based on statistical analysis of the corpus and previous findings about the diversity of older people’s behaviour.

  • In this paper we present results on developing robust natural language interfaces by combining shallow and partial interpretation with dialogue management. The key issue is to reduce the effort needed to adapt the knowledge sources for parsing and interpretation to a necessary minimum. In the paper we identify different types of information and present corresponding computational models. The approach utilizes an automatically generated lexicon which is updated with information from a corpus of simulated dialogues. The grammar is developed manually from the same knowledge sources. ...

  • The subject of this demonstration is natural language interaction, focusing on adaptivity and profiling of the dialogue management and the generated output (text and speech). These are demonstrated in a museum guide use-case, operating in a simulated environment. The main technical innovations presented are the profiling model, the dialogue and action management system, and the text generation and speech synthesis systems.

  • We study a simple three-lane cellular automaton, based upon the well known NagelSchreckenberg model, and examine the effect of slow cars in such a system. We point out the important parameters defining the shape of the fundamental digram for the three-lane model and compare it to that of a two-lane one, showing the new mode of interactions between lanes. It is possible to reduce the influence of slow cars by choosing an adequate version of the symmetry with respect to lanes.

  • Computer simulation is used to reduce the risk associated with creating new systems or with making changes to existing ones. More than ever, modern organizations want assurance that investments will produce the expected results. For instance, an assembly line may be required to produce a particular number of autos during an eight hour shift. Complex, interacting factors influence operation and so powerful tools are needed to develop an accurate analysis.

  • In this paper, we describe a new methodology to develop mixed-initiative spoken dialog systems, which is based on the extensive use of simulations to accelerate the development process. With the help of simulations, a system providing information about a database of nearly 1000 restaurants in the Boston area has been developed. The simulator can produce thousands of unique dialogs which benefit not only dialog development but also provide data to train the speech recognizer and understanding components, in preparation for real user interactions. ...

  • Shock wave–boundary-layer interactions (SBLIs) occur when a shock wave and a boundary layer converge and, since both can be found in almost every supersonic flow, these interactions are commonplace. The most obvious way for them to arise is for an externally generated shock wave to impinge onto a surface on which there is a boundary layer.

  • The PIC 16F877A microcontroller is used as the reference device in this book, as it contains a full range of peripherals and a reasonable memory capacity. It was also used in the previous work on interfacing, so there is continuity if the book series is taken as a complete course in PIC application development. Microcontrollers are traditionally programmed in assembly language, each type having its own syntax, which translates directly into machine code.
