  • Surveying a vast theory like Teichmüller theory is like surveying a land, and the various chapters in this Handbook are like a collection of maps forming an atlas: some of them give a very general overview of the field, others give a detailed view of some crowded area, and others are more focussed on interesting details. There are intersections between the chapters, and these intersections are necessary.

  • Why are we interested in solving simultaneous equations? We often have to find a point which satisfies more than one equation simultaneously, for example when finding equilibrium price and quantity given supply and demand functions. To be an equilibrium, the point (Q; P) must lie on both the supply and demand curves. Now both supply and demand curves can be plotted on the same diagram and the point(s) of intersection will be the equilibrium (equilibria)

  • If P and Q are two sets, we shall define a new set P ∩Q, called the intersection of P and Q, as follows: P ∩ Q is the set which contains those and only those elements which belong to both P and Q. As an example, consider the logical possibilities listed in Figure 2.1. Let P be the subset in which candidate A wins at least three primaries, i.e., the set {P1, P2, P3, P4, P7, P13, P19}; let Q be the subset in which A wins the first two primaries, i.e., the set {P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6}. Then the intersection P ∩Q is...

  • This book proves a number of important theorems that are commonly given in advanced books on Commutative Algebra without proof, owing to the difficulty of the existing proofs. In short, we give homological proofs of these results, but instead of the original ones involving simplicial methods, we modify these to use only lower dimensional homology modules, that we can introduce in an ad hoc way, thus avoiding simplicial theory. This allows us to give complete and comparatively short proofs of the important results we state below.

  • We use these theoretical underpinning to specify estimable equations for the supply of and demand for corporate credit. Since theory does not provide clues as to the possible structural forms of these equations we basically rely on reduced forms. Data considerations, in particular, the availability of relevant statistical data, also has played a certain role in the specification of these equations.

  • Given a holomorphic vector bundle E over a compact K¨hler manifold X, a one defines twisted Gromov-Witten invariants of X to be intersection numbers in moduli spaces of stable maps f : Σ → X with the cap product of the virtual fundamental class and a chosen multiplicative invertible characteristic class of the virtual vector bundle H 0 (Σ, f ∗ E) H 1 (Σ, f ∗ E). Using the formalism of quantized quadratic Hamiltonians [25], we express the descendant potential for the twisted theory in terms of that for X. ...

  • The second shift is methodological in nature. Until recently only two strategies were available for studying the biological mecha- nisms underlying artistic appreciation and creation: first, making theoretical conjectures based on general understanding of brain structure and function; and second, single case-studies of brain injuries affecting art-related activities. The former produced theo- ries that often went untested (and were sometimes untestable), while the latter generated accounts that were often anecdotal, incomplete and difficult to interpret.

  • We establish a correspondence between orbifold and singular elliptic genera of a global quotient. While the former is defined in terms of the fixed point set of the action, the latter is defined in terms of the resolution of singularities. As a byproduct, the second quantization formula of Dijkgraaf, Moore, Verlinde and Verlinde is extended to arbitrary Kawamata log-terminal pairs. 1. Introduction One of the fundamental problems suggested by the intersection homology theory is to determine which characteristic numbers can be defined for singular varieties. ...

  • Most raw ingredients will be labelled in bags, boxes or jars if in shipments, warehouses or in storerooms of pharmacies and retail outlets. The first step to identifying an ingredient is to compare the Roman, pinyin and/or Chinese characters to the name list in this guide. It is a matter of comparison and familiarisation with the characters and pinyin. If raw ingredients are not labelled and not obviously of interest (such as an animal horn or bones), it is best to refer to an expert or accept that identification is probably not possible.
