  • Product evaluation is an important part of brewing, whether performed informally or formally and whether the product is from a commercial or home brewery. Formal beer evaluation serves three primary purposes in the context of brewing competitions. First, the beer evaluations provide feedback to the brewer concerning how well an individual recipe represents its intended beer style. This feedback can be useful as recipes are fine-tuned and attempts are made to improve the beer. Second, beer evaluations may provide brewers with troubleshooting advice.

Measles (see section below on vaccine-preventable diseases), ARI, diphtheria and pertussis are transmitted from person to person through respiratory droplets, and the risks are increased in situations of forced relocation to shared areas which are overcrowded and have inadequate ventilation. Overcrowding can also increase the likelihood of transmission of meningitis, waterborne and vector-borne diseases.

  • Easier implementation could expand services. Reported difficulties with implementing PMTCT programmes, including the challenge of providing ARV treatment in MCH settings and at the primary care level, highlight the importance of simplifying drug regimens and operational delivery, as exemplified by Options B and B+. Easier implementation should facilitate expansion of services and more effective programmes. This will, however, require strengthened antenatal services, task-shifting, more effective ARV service delivery in MCH settings and direct linkages with ART programmes.

  • Regimen efficiency and simplification. Another key advantage of Options B and B+ is greater efficiency, very much in accord with Treatment 2.0 principles. First, the same simplified, fixed-dose combination ARV regimen can be used throughout the PMTCT intervention. Further, it is possible, and highly desirable, to provide the same regimen both for PMTCT and as the first-line national ART regimen for non-pregnant individuals.

  • Concerns about the potential environmental, social and economic impacts of climate change have led to a major international debate over what could and should be done to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, which are claimed to be the main cause. There is still a scientific debate over the likely scale of climate change, and the complex interactions between human activities and climate systems, but, in the words of no less than Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, ‘I say the debate is over. We know the science, we see the threat, and the time for action is now.’...

  • We also suggest that interventions providing associated benefits in kind may be less likely than those offering a straightforward financial reward to be perceived as a 'purchase' of a body part: indeed, for egg-sharing we have noted the argument that the benefit being received is not financial at all in nature but rather the opportunity to bear a child. Given that one of the key concerns around any form of non-altruistic-focused intervention is the risk of material being mis- valued, we distinguish between these two approaches through rungs 5 and 6 on the Intervention Ladder.
