  • During the 1990s, humanitarian intervention seemed to promise a world in which democracy, self-determination and human rights would be privileged over national interests or imperial ambitions. Orford provides critical readings of the narratives that accompanied such interventions and shaped legal justifications for the use of force by the international community. Through a close reading of legal texts and institutional practice, she argues that a far more circumscribed, exploitative and conservative interpretation of the ends of intervention was adopted during this period.

  • The perfect cardiac catheterization technique, including good diagnostic and therapeutic qualities, without risk and with no recovery time for the patient, does not exist. Obtaining initial access to the arterial circulation is the first and most frequent catheterization difficulty encountered by the interventional cardiologist during the procedure. Often, it is also the only difficult part of the exam for the patient because it may cause a vagal reaction or painful spasm.

  • It is only 26 years since the first percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) was carried out by the pioneering Swiss radiologist, Andreas Greuntzig, heralding the dawn of interventional cardiology. In this short time, interventional cardiology has overcome many limitations and undergone major evolutionary changes—most notably the development of the coronary stent. Worldwide, many thousands of patients now safely undergo percutaneous coronary intervention every day, and the numbers continue to grow.

  • This book began many years ago as an inquiry into the legal issues sur- rounding humanitarian intervention—which I define as the use of military force to protect the victims of human rights violations. As I delved into the matter, however, I found that the legal problems of humanitarian interven- tion were inextricably intertwined with important ethical issues, including whether or not all countries and their citizens have a duty to come to the rescue of those whose lives are imperiled by the malicious behavior of their own governments or by armed factions.

  • Microvascular perfusion is often impaired after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We proposed that in situ thrombosis might contribute to poor myocardial perfusion in this setting. To test this hypothesis, we evaluated the effect of lowdose intracoronary streptokinase administered immediately after primary PCI. Methods Forty-one patients undergoing primary PCI were randomly assigned to receive intracoronary streptokinase (250 kU) or no additional therapy.

  • For the 57th Nestlé Pediatric Nutrition Workshop, which took place in May 2005 at Half Moon Bay, San Francisco, the topic ‘Primary Prevention by Nutrition Intervention in Infancy and Childhood’ was chosen. Early nutrition seems to be involved in the mechanism of control, especially taking into account the role of protein and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs). It seems that the new generation of infant formulas already takes those findings into consideration. We would like to thank the two chairmen, Prof. Hugh Sampson and Prof.
