  • First and foremost, I want to thank my clients and my friends for supporting me when I decided to take the leap into the telecommuting lifestyle. It was very much like skydiving for the first time—massive fear and adrenaline until you land on the ground. If you get it right once, you want to do it again and again. Above all, I want to thank my wife for not passing out the day I showed up at home for lunch—and never went back. Through my odd little twists and turns in my latest endeavors, even though you didn't understand everything I did,...

Yet there has been concern that trade has encouraged greater capital intensity. This paper compares labour absorbtion that arises from trade and from the domestic market. It takes this further to consider employment created by export destination. A fuller understanding of employment implications is made possible by using social accounting matrix to take into account both direct and indirect employment....

  • Molecules, small structures composed of atoms, are essential substances for lives. However, we didn’t have the clear answer to the following questions until the 1920s: why molecules can exist in stable as rigid networks between atoms, and why molecules can change into different types of molecules. The most important event for solving the puzzles is the discovery of the quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics is the theory for small particles such as electrons and nuclei, and was applied to hydrogen molecule by Heitler and London at 1927.

  • Most students want to get good marks for their essays, and pass every exam. Most students worry about not knowing enough to do this. Some are right to worry. But you may not realise that your marks depend at least as much on how well you can communicate your knowledge. This chapter looks at how you can use what you know to the very best effect. Getting great marks is a skill in its own right, and is obviously important at university. Less obviously, most of the constituent skills are highly transferable....

  • To better understand the sources of outperformance, we undertake an attribution analysis that decomposes investor returns into that from (1) the selection of Pan-European funds, (2) the selection of country funds, (3) the selection of sector funds, and (4) the timing of country weights implied by the selection of country funds. This analysis shows that the superior returns associated with the macroeconomic-driven strategies arise from the last three sources of performance, and not from choosing Pan-European funds.

  • Since such a fund is determined according to a pre-ranking of all fund alphas, a correct inference about its alpha must take into account the entire cross-section of the fund alphas3. In this context, they advocate to use a bootstrap procedure, and conclude that they account for luck in the sense that they correctly compute the p-values of the individual funds4. This definition of luck is not related to the issue of multiple testing investigated in this paper.

  • Gamma-retroviral vectors, commonly designated retroviral vectors, were the first viral vector employed in Gene Therapy clinical trials in 1990 and are still one of the most used. More recently, the interest in lentiviral vectors, derived from complex retroviruses such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), has been growing due to their ability to transduce non-dividing cells (Lewis et al. 1992; Naldini et al. 1996), an attribute that distinguishes them from other viral vectors, including their simple counterparts, gammaretroviral vectors.

  • One strand in the recent academic literature seeks to explain the existence of different bank interest rates on loans and deposits on the basis of monopolistic competition in the banking sector. In this case, banks earn a positive profit margin because they can set the level of bank interest rates such that deposit rates are below the interbank rate and loan rates are above it. In addition, the bank faces costs in adjusting its interest rates and will take the pricing decision of competitors into account in order to preserve long-term customer relationships.

  • Micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) make important contributions to economic and social development. In all economies they constitute the vast majority of business establishments, are usually responsible for the majority of jobs created and account for one third to two thirds of the turnover of the private sector. In many countries they have been the major engine of growth in employment and output over the last two decades. In developing countries they are seen as a major ‘self-help’ instrument for poverty eradication.

  • The 72 ranked problem, “Employee Turnover,” is a new entrant to the bottom 10 as it ranked 51st in 2008. The economic downturn ignited extensive layoffs by both large and small businesses. The number of businesses decreasing their labor force far outweighed those increasing it, leaving few alternative job opportunities for those who remained employed. This continues as the economic recovery remains anemic and business owners are hesitant to expand.

  • This piece of art was created by the Finn Raimo Veranen and is entitled Ready to Fly. It depicts 56 children dancing or jumping, but the shadows cast by the light give the impression of many more. Raimo Veranen has almost made the motif of children his own trademark over the years. “In the early 1980s, my wife was expecting a baby and was scanned. On the screen, we saw a tiny figure making rapid, jerky movements. I remember that very clearly and it has become a source of inspiration in my work,” he says. The children in the pie- ce are happy, open and ready to jump into...

Yildiz and Chang (2003) similarly reported that most...

  • The bulk of all new jobs has been shown to be created by a small number of high-growth firms (henceforth HGFs). However, no earlier study has analyzed the contribution of HGFs to economic growth or productivity. Furthermore, when their economic contribution is analyzed, HGFs have previously without exception been defined using growth in sales or employment as growth indicators. By growth indicator we refer to the variable in terms of which firm growth is defined. No previous study examining the contribution of HGFs has defined HGFs on growth in value added or productivity. ...
