  • We classify measures on the locally homogeneous space Γ\ SL(2, R) × L which are invariant and have positive entropy under the diagonal subgroup of SL(2, R) and recurrent under L. This classification can be used to show arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity for compact arithmetic surfaces, and a similar but slightly weaker result for the finite volume case. Other applications are also presented. In the appendix, joint with D. Rudolph, we present a maximal ergodic theorem, related to a theorem of Hurewicz, which is used in theproof of the main result. ...

  • Invariant measures for the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of a negatively curved Riemannian manifold are a basic and well-studied subject. This paper continues an investigation into a 2-dimensional analog of this flow for a 3-manifold N . Namely, the article discusses 2-dimensional surfaces immersed into N whose product of principal curvature equals a constant k between 0 and 1, surfaces which are called k-surfaces.

  • We classify the measures on SL(k, R)/ SL(k, Z) which are invariant and ergodic under the action of the group A of positive diagonal matrices with positive entropy. We apply this to prove that the set of exceptions to Littlewood’s conjecture has Hausdorff dimension zero. 1. Introduction 1.1. Number theory and dynamics. There is a long and rich tradition of applying dynamical methods to number theory.

  • Having a vision, a mission, and a passion are invariably seen as conditions for success. The 1995 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) concept of a Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) demonstrated that the leaders of DHHS had a vision for an effective response to a mass-casualty terrorism incident with a weapon of mass destruction. The mission was to expand the experimental model of the Metropolitan Medical Strike Team (MMST) established in Washington, D.C., and neighboring counties into a national program.

  • OF INVARIANT FIBER BUNDLES FOR DYNAMIC EQUATIONS ON MEASURE CHAINS ¨ CHRISTIAN POTZSCHE AND STEFAN SIEGMUND Received 8 August 2003 m -SMOOTHNESS We present a new self-contained and rigorous proof of the smoothness of invariant fiber bundles for dynamic equations on measure chains or time scales. Here, an invariant fiber bundle is the generalization of an invariant manifold to the nonautonomous case.

  • A measurement of the underlying event (UE) activity in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is performed using Drell–Yan events in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 fb−1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The activity measured in the muonic final state (qq → μ + μ −) is corrected to the particle level and compared with the predictions of various Monte Carlo generators and hadronization models.

  • Lars Ahlfors often spoke of his excitement as a young student listening to Rolf Nevanlinna's lectures on the new theory of meromorphic functions. It was, as he writes in his collected papers, his "first exposure to live mathematics." In his enormously influential research papers and in his equally influential books, Ahlfors shared with the reader, both professional and student, that excitement. The present volume derives from lectures given at Harvard over many years, and the topics would now be considered quite classical.

  • LEAST-SQUARES AND MINIMUM– VARIANCE ESTIMATES FOR LINEAR TIME-INVARIANT SYSTEMS 4.1 GENERAL LEAST-SQUARES ESTIMATION RESULTS In Section 2.4 we developed (2.4-3), relating the 1 Â 1 measurement matrix Y n to the 2 Â 1 state vector X n through the 1 Â 2 observation matrix M as given by Y n ¼ MX n þ N n ð4:1-1Þ It was also pointed out in Sections 2.4 and 2.10 that this linear time-invariant equation (i.e., M is independent of time or equivalently n) applies to more general cases that we generalize further here. Specifically we assume Y n is a 1 Â ðr...

  • Recent measurements of local-area and wide-area traf®c [8, 28, 42] have shown that network traf®c exhibits variability at a wide range of scales. What is striking is the ubiquitousness of the phenomenon, which has been observed in diverse networking contexts, from Ethernet to ATM, LAN and WAN, compressed video, and HTTPbased WWW traf®c [8, 15, 23, 42]. Such scale-invariant variability is in strong contrast to traditional models of network traf®c, which show burstiness at short time scales but are essentially smooth at large time scales; that is, they lack long-range dependence. Since...

  • Under explicit diophantine conditions on (α, β) ∈ R2 , we prove that the local two-point correlations of the sequence given by the values (m − α)2 + (n−β)2 , with (m, n) ∈ Z2 , are those of a Poisson process. This partly confirms a conjecture of Berry and Tabor [2] on spectral statistics of quantized integrable systems, and also establishes a particular case of the quantitative version of the Oppenheim conjecture for inhomogeneous quadratic forms of signature (2,2). The proof uses theta sums and Ratner’s classification of measures invariant under unipotent flows. ...

  • We classify the measure theoretic attractors of general C 3 unimodal maps with quadratic critical points. The main ingredient is the decay of geometry. 1. Introduction 1.1. Statement of results. The study of measure theoretical attractors occupied a central position in the theory of smooth dynamical systems in the 1990s. Recall that a forward invariant compact set A is called a (minimal) metric attractor for some dynamics if the basin of attraction B(A) := {x : ω(x) ⊂ A} of A has positive Lebesgue measure and B(A ) has Lebesgue measure zero for every forward invariant compact set...
