  • This paper presents a method for extracting distinctive invariant features from images that can be used to perform reliable matching between different views of an object or scene. The features are invariant to image scale and rotation, and are shown to provide robust matching across a a substantial range of affine distortion, change in 3D viewpoint, addition of noise, and change in illumination. The features are highly distinctive, in the sense that a single feature can be correctly matched with high probability against a large database of features from many images.

  • We classify measures on the locally homogeneous space Γ\ SL(2, R) × L which are invariant and have positive entropy under the diagonal subgroup of SL(2, R) and recurrent under L. This classification can be used to show arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity for compact arithmetic surfaces, and a similar but slightly weaker result for the finite volume case. Other applications are also presented. In the appendix, joint with D. Rudolph, we present a maximal ergodic theorem, related to a theorem of Hurewicz, which is used in theproof of the main result. ...

  • We prove that a type II1 factor M can have at most one Cartan subalgebra A satisfying a combination of rigidity and compact approximation properties. We use this result to show that within the class HT of factors M having such Cartan subalgebras A ⊂ M , the Betti numbers of the standard equivalence relation associated with A ⊂ M ([G2]), are in fact isomorphism invariants for HT the factors M , βn (M ), n ≥ 0. The class HT is closed under amplifications HT HT and tensor products,

  • A major focus of current work in distributional models of semantics is to construct phrase representations compositionally from word representations. However, the syntactic contexts which are modelled are usually severely limited, a fact which is reflected in the lexical-level WSD-like evaluation methods used.

  • In this paper, we put forward an information theoretic definition of the redundancy that is observed across the sound inventories of the world’s languages. Through rigorous statistical analysis, we find that this redundancy is an invariant property of the consonant inventories. The statistical analysis further unfolds that the vowel inventories do not exhibit any such property, which in turn points to the fact that the organizing principles of the vowel and the consonant inventories are quite different in nature. ...

  • In this paper we provide a formalization of a set of default rules that we claim are required for the transfer of information such as causation, event rate and duration in the interpretation of metaphor. Such rules are domain-independent and are identified as invariant adjuncts to any conceptual metaphor. We also show a way of embedding the invariant mappings in a semantic framework.

  • Abstract In 1963 Atiyah and Singer proved the famous Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem, which states, among other things, that the space of elliptic pseudodifferential operators is such that the collection of operators with any given index forms a connected subset. Contained in this statement is the somewhat more specialized claim that the index of an elliptic operator must be invariant under sufficiently small perturbations.

  • In the symplectic category there is a ‘connect sum’ operation that glues symplectic manifolds by identifying neighborhoods of embedded codimension two submanifolds. This paper establishes a formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic sum Z = X#Y in terms of the relative GW invariants of X and Y . Several applications to enumerative geometry are given. Gromov-Witten invariants are counts of holomorphic maps into symplectic manifolds.

  • I prove a formula expressing the descendent genus g Gromov-Witten invariants of a projective variety X in terms of genus 0 invariants of its symmetric product stack S g+1 (X). When X is a point, the latter are structure constants of the symmetric group, and we obtain a new way of calculating the GromovWitten invariants of a point. 1. Introduction Let X be a smooth projective variety. The genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants of X satisfy relations which imply that they can be completely encoded in the structure of a Frobenius manifold on the cohomology H ∗ (X, C). ...

  • In this paper we compute the σ-invariants (sometimes also called the smooth Yamabe invariants) of RP3 and RP2 × S 1 (which are equal) and show that the only prime 3-manifolds with larger σ-invariants are S 3 , S 2 × S 1 , and ˜ S 2 ×S 1 (the nonorientable S 2 bundle over S 1 ). More generally, we show that any 3-manifold with σ-invariant greater than RP3 is either S 3 , a connect sum with an S 2 bundle over S 1 , or has more than one nonorientable prime component. A corollary...

  • Holomorphic disks and topological invariants for closed three-manifolds ´ ´ ´ By Peter Ozsvath and Zoltan Szabo* Abstract The aim of this article is to introduce certain topological invariants for closed, oriented three-manifolds Y , equipped with a Spinc structure. Given a Heegaard splitting of Y = U0 ∪Σ U1 , these theories are variants of the Lagrangian Floer homology for the g-fold symmetric product of Σ relative to certain totally real subspaces associated to U0 and U1 . 1. Introduction Let Y be a connected, closed, oriented three-manifold, equipped with a Spin structure s. ...

  • In [27], we introduced Floer homology theories HF − (Y, s), HF ∞ (Y, s), HF (Y, s),and HFred (Y, s) associated to closed, oriented three-manifolds Y equipped with a Spinc structures s ∈ Spinc (Y ). In the present paper, we give calculations and study the properties of these invariants. The calculations suggest a conjectured relationship with Seiberg-Witten theory.
