Food safety and foodborne diseases are topics of global concern. Food safety
encompasses many areas, including pesticide and antibiotic residues, the presence
of mycotoxins and foodborne pathogens, and all aspects of food production
and preparation. Many issues associated with these topics are common to all
countries. Decisions must be made by each nation to determine priority areas
that should be addressed to ensure the health of its citizens.
Our empirical results are based on monthly returns of 1,472 U.S. open-end, domestic
equity mutual funds existing at any time between 1975 and 2002. We investigate
the performance of the entire cross-section of mutual funds, as well as the cross-section
of each of three investment-objective categories, growth, aggressive-growth, and growth
We first show that the impact of luck on performance is substantial.
This volume, like its predecessor The Social Life of Avatars: Presence and
Interaction in Shared Virtual Environments , aims to provide a state-of-theart
overview of research about how people interact in shared virtual environments
(SVEs). Unlike the first volume, which covered a wide variety of topics,
the essays collected here focus on two applications of SVEs; collaborativework
and online gaming. These two areas are rapidly emerging as key drivers of SVE
All Americans have a stake in effective response to hate
crimes. These crimes demand priority attention because
of their special impact. Bias crimes are designed to
intimidate the victim and members of the victim’s
community, leaving them feeling isolated, vulnerable,
and unprotected by the law. Failure to address this
unique type of crime could cause an isolated incident to
explode into widespread community tension. The
damage done by hate crimes, therefore, cannot be
measured solely in terms of physical injury or dollars and
For this paper, we have examined the concept of an investigation to determine what is required.
The result is an event-based framework that can be used to develop hypotheses and answer questions
about an incident or crime. Hypotheses are developed by collecting objects that may have played
a role in an event that was related to the incident. Once the objects are collected as evidence, the
investigator can develop hypotheses about previous events at the crime scene.
In 1976, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) published brief guidelines for the investigation, diagnostic evaluation, and
medical treatment of TB contacts. Although investigation of contacts and treatment of infected contacts is an important component
of the U.S. strategy for TB elimination, second in priority to treatment of persons with TB disease, national guidelines have
not been updated since 1976.

Balanced and coordinated advances within these research areas will pave
the way to meeting the 2020 vision target of a fivefold increase in renewable
resource use. Figures 11A to 11D detail goals for these priority research areas.
Cost of materials surfaced many times as a major issue during the steering
group’s investigations. Lowering unit costs is critical for sustainable economic

“consulting a conservator in the process of designing a
public sculpture is a precautionary measure which can
only result in a more durable finished product. We can’t
foresee all problems, but we can certainly minimize them
by thoroughly investigating materials and fabrication
Preserving the integrity of the artwork should be the
highest priority during the design process. In the United
States, federal and state laws address issues of preservation
and artists’ and moral rights.
The ESPON 2006 program has revealed that many questions related to territorial
cohesion can not be fully explored at NUTS2 or NUTS3 levels and need further
investigations at more local levels LAU1 and LAU2 (former NUTS4 and NUTS5). Case
studies providing zoom on specific territories at local level (rural areas, cross border
areas, intra-urban differentiation, …) will be more and more requested in ESPON 2013
program for project of priority 2 and, in certain cases, for project of priority 1.
More specifically, the recommended assessment should identify the occurrence (in
space and time) of both surface and groundwater quantity and their associated water
quality, together with a tentative assessment of trends in water requirements and water
resources development (see Box 10.1). The assessment should be based, as far as
possible, on existing data and knowledge in order to avoid unnecessary delays in the
process of management improvement.
Last year the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) entered into a
contract with NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) entitled Increasing capacity for
regional fish feed manufacture in PNG which provided funds to purchase the feed manufacturing
equipment involved and enable the Principal Investigators, Drs Geoff Allan and Mark Booth, to
participate in the Workshop and provide training in aquaculture nutrition and aquafeed
formulation using locally grown agricultural ingredients.
