  • Since the dawn of history, human activities have always been closely related to friction, the resistance to sliding. It is thanks to friction that one can stand and walk on the ground, one can wear clothes, one can make fire by rubbing two sticks together, or one can even start and stop a car. In these cases friction is very useful for human beings. In many other cases, however, human activities have been very much hampered by friction since ancient times. How to diminish friction is one of the most basic technological problems. For example, when a heavy...

  • In order to meet the increasing demand for valve-regulated lead–acid ŽVRLA. batteries, a new soft lead has been produced by Pasminco Metals. In this material, bismuth is increased to a level that produces a significant improvement in battery cycle life. By contrast, other common impurities, such as arsenic, cobalt, chromium, nickel, antimony and tellurium, that are known to be harmful to VRLA batteries are controlled to very low levels. A bismuth ŽBi.-bearing oxide has been manufactured ŽBarton-pot method. ...

  • Brief overview of bearings Bearings are broadly categorized into two types, fluid film and rolling contact type. Fluid Film bearings In fluid film bearing the entire load of the shaft is carried by a thin film of fluid present between the rotating and non-rotating elements. The types of fluid film bearings are as follows, Sliding contact type Journal bearing Thrust bearing Slider bearing Rolling contact bearings In rolling contact bearings,

  • Tower reported the results of a series of experiments intended to determine the best methods to lubricate a railroad journal bearing. Working with a partial journal bearing in an oil bath, he noticed and later measured the pressure generated in the oil film. Tower pointed out that without sufficient lubrication, the bearing operates in the boundary lubrication regime, whereas with adequate lubrication the two surfaces are completely separated by an oil film. Petrov [5] also conducted experiments to measure the frictional losses in bearings.

  • The basic human right of self-determination is meaningless for women who do not have the ability to control reproduction. Devoting an issue of this journal to contraception makes sense at this time when the unintended pregnancy rate in the United States continues to hover at 50%. Every woman knows whether it is the right time for her to bear a child and for her and her family to commit the considerable personal and financial resources necessary for raising that child. But the impact of contraception transcends the importance of individual choice.
