  • As the world of politics and public affairs has gradually changed beyond recognition over the past two decades, journalism too has been transformed. Yet the study of news and journalism often seems stuck with ideas and debates which have lost much of their critical purchase. Journalism is at a crossroads: it needs to reaffirm core values and rediscover key activities, almost certainly in new forms, or it risks losing its distinctive character as well as its commercial basis.

  • Chapters V and VII of this book appeared, nearly in their present form, in the International Journal of Ethics. (July 1896, and July 1897.) The other chapters have not been previously published. In referring to Hegel’s works I have used the Collected Edition, the publication of which began in 1832. For purposes of quotation I have generally availed myself of Wallace’s translation of the Encyclopaedia, of Dyde’s translation of the Philosophy of Law, and of Spiers’ and Sanderson’s translation of the Philosophy of Religion. I am much indebted to Mr G. L.

  • Increased intake of saturated fat and refined sugars underlies much of the problem of emerging obesity all over the world. This includes middle-income countries like Thailand, which are subject to successful marketing of Western fast foods especially targeted at adolescents. In this study we explore the socio-cultural influences on fast-food intake for non-metropolitan (rural and urban) adolescents in North East Thailand (Isan).

  • Operating eco-industrial park (EIP) based on industrial ecology theory has emerged since 1970s to reduce the impact of waste and save natural resources. It is especially meaningful for developing countries like Vietnam to reach sustainable development goals. The study is based on the theory of industrial ecology, the previous studies of applicable capacity in Vietnam condition and the development orientations in Hai Duong province – the study area.

  • In this research, remote sensing technology was used to evaluate urban development and its thermal characteristics through mapping impervious surfaces and evaluating thermal infrared images. The study is carried out in the northern part of Ho Chi Minh City, which is experienced an accelerated urban development since the end of 1980s. Landsat and Aster images were used to calculate the variation in urban impervious surfaces from 1989 to 2006. Thermal bands were processed to obtain land surface temperatures for investigating the urban heat island effect...

  • The potential benefits of tutoring for pre-service teachers in various content areas are well documented in a number of studies (see, for example, Ryan & Robinson, 1990, Fresko, 1999; Hedrick, 1999). Tutoring can lead to an increased sense of accom- plishment and self-esteem, better mastery of academic skills, increased ability to apply and integrate knowledge taught in different courses and a broader, more real- istic outlook on the process of teaching and learning.

  • Mangroves play an important role in coastal zones in many aspects e.g. extremely essential habitats for many species, coastlines protection from natural hazards, and so on. However, in Vietnam, like in other developing countries, these mangrove areas have been destroyed and encroached as a consequence of a poorly planned economic development. The study has been conducted in Phu Long - Gia Luan region, which have the largest mangrove area in the Cat Ba Archipelago Biosphere Reserve, Hai Phong City, Vietnam. The aims of the study are to investigate existing land...

  • The paper presents the results of a numerical study on the interaction of waves and a submerged breakwater. The numerical study is the application of an advanced numerical model named as CMED, which is based on the Narvier-Stokes equations and VOF (Volume of Fluid) method, and has been previously developed by the author. The consideration is paid for the investigation on the influence of the characteristics of the breakwater on the variation of some parameter coefficients, such as reflection, transmission and energy dissipation coefficients.

  • We study the impact of richer syntactic dependencies on the performance of the structured language model (SLM) along three dimensions: parsing accuracy (LP/LR), perplexity (PPL) and worderror-rate (WER, N-best re-scoring). We show that our models achieve an improvement in LP/LR, PPL and/or WER over the reported baseline results using the SLM on the UPenn Treebank and Wall Street Journal (WSJ) corpora, respectively. Analysis of parsing performance shows correlation between the quality of the parser (as measured by precision/recall) and the language model performance (PPL and WER). ...

  • This book is the first to look at NLP coaching as an evidence-based discipline. Susie Linder-Pelz describes how NLP coaching works, using examples and case studies to highlight what distinguishes it from other coaching approaches. She briefs readers on the theoretical underpinnings of NLP, and she explains which aspects of NLP can be backed with evidence and which aspects are not yet substantiated. A set of research questions helps coaches understand when and how to use NLP.

  • This book is a review and analysis of the literature and presenta- tion of data from a series of surveys that attempts to provide in- sights into how engineers communicate. Much of the focus of the book is on the professional aspects of engineers’ work, the infor- mation resources used to perform their work, and information output from their work that is communicated to others. Many of our studies and those of others dealt with traditional interperson- al and written communication channels....

  • Primary chemically formed lead dioxide (PbO2 ) was used as positive electrode in preparation of lead–acid bipolar batteries. Chemical oxidation was carried out by both mixing and dipping methods using an optimized amount of ammonium persulfate as a suitable oxidizing agent. Xray diffraction studies showed that the weight ratio of -PbO2 to -PbO2 is more for mixing method before electrochemical forming.

  • Considering the vital importance of writing skill in ESL studies, it is highly desirable that learners of English in our schools and colleges have the required level of proficiency in this field. However, the glaring truth is that majority of students at High School level in vernacular medium schools through out the country have a very poor proficiency level in writing. This has been studied and recorded by many research scholars from various parts of the country.

  • In the past several years, there have been many developments in the materials for lead–acid batteries. Silver in grid alloys for high temperature climates in SLI batteries has increased the silver content of the recycled lead stream. Concern about silver and other contaminants in lead for the active material for VRLA batteries led to the initiation of a study by ALABC at CSIRO. The study evaluated the effects of many different impurities on the hydrogen and oxygen evolution currents in float service for flooded and VRLA batteries at different temperatures and potentials. ...

  • Although experience with enforcing mandates for health insurance is limited, some lessons can be drawn from other types of enforcement. National compliance rates for certain other mandates—such as provisions requiring that workers receive at least the minimum wage, children be vaccinated, drivers purchase auto insurance and wear seat belts, and people pay taxes—range from 63 percent to 85 percent, and the rates appear to improve as enforcement intensifies (Ashenfelter and Smith, 1979; Davis and Gaglia, 2005; Insurance Research Council, 2006; IRS, 2007; NHTSA, 2008).

  • The conservation of artefacts and buildings has a long history, but the positive emergence of conservation as a profession can be said to date from the foundation of the International Institute for the Conservation of Museum Objects (IIC) in 1950 (the last two words of the title being later changed to Historic and Artistic Works) and the appearance soon after in 1952 of its journal Studies in Conservation.

  • It is unusual to tackle a dissertation project 14 years after completing one’s studies. In my case it was an assignment at the Swiss Banking School that triggered it off. Professor Dr Ernst Kilgus, who was its Director at the time, encouraged me to develop my assignment, and we agreed in the course of our conversations to bring this about in the form of a dissertation.
