Daptine is the secret of it. Adaptine, they called it first; then it got shortened to daptine. It let us adapt. They explained it all to us when we were ten years old; I guess they thought we were too young to understand before then, although we knew a lot of it already. They told us just after we landed on Mars. "You're home, children," the Head Teacher told us after we had gone into the glassite dome they'd built for us there. And he told us there'd be a special lecture for us that evening, an important one that...
He reached over and snapped the visiphone switch before his boss could have the satisfaction. He stomped to the window, still raging at Ostreich's lack of appreciation. But he chuckled when he saw the activity in the street. The crowds were thickening at the intersections, and a special battalion of city police were trying to keep things moving. Behind him, the visiphone was beeping frantically again.

SmartReporter implements a Consolidation Policy, which goes over your original, "raw" log file. It compresses similar logs into events and writes the compressed list of events into a relational database (the SmartReporter Database). This database enables quick and efficient generation of a wide range of reports. The SmartReporter solution provides a balance between keeping the smallest report database possible and retaining the most vital information with the most flexibility.
The words that recur in the literature of an age offer clues to contemporary
fascinations and anxieties. In the eighteenth century, “account” is
such a word, taking various forms and conveying multiple meanings.
Account, accounting, accountable: the words are found everywhere from
tutelary texts to novels, particularly – it turns out – in literature about
and directed toward women.
Spin-out companies from university science departments are very
fashionable, important and much encouraged by governments. The new
high-tech companies offer the hope of keeping Western economies
viable at a time when much manufacturing is being outsourced to
developing countries. At the same time they are the best possible means
by which those same developing countries can move away from a mere
reliance on cheap labour and develop their own sophisticated industrial

The FSA financial capability survey measured different types of financial behaviour and
attitudes in five key areas: making ends meet, keeping track of money, planning ahead,
choosing products, and staying informed across the UK population. This survey is due to
be repeated in 2010 and every four to five years thereafter.
Improvements in the level of financial capability require a long-term change in attitudes,
habits and behaviour towards money. The National Audit Office has recognised that
measuring those changes is inherently difficult.
On August 23rd
, the Italian Treasury announced it is preparing a plan to temporarily
reduce taxes on gasoline and other petroleum-based fuels by about one-third, sparking
protests from environmental organizations saying the lower taxes will negate carbon
taxes designed to discourage use of high-polluting fuels. In a prepared statement, the
Italian Treasury said it would cut gasoline taxes but that details about the plan are still
being worked out. The treasury plans to lower taxes temporarily as a way to ease the
blow of rising oil prices.
This book is in all probability the last of a series of writings, of which—disregarding certain earlier disconnected essays—my Anticipations was the beginning. Originally I intended Anticipations to be my sole digression from my art or trade (or what you will) of an imaginative writer. I wrote that book in order to clear up the muddle in my own mind about innumerable social and political questions, questions I could not keep out of my work, which it distressed me to touch upon in a stupid haphazard way, and which no one, so far as I knew, had handled in a...

Breathes there a speaker with soul so dead, Who never to himself hath said, As he hears his name from the podium read, I wish to hell I stayed in bed!” “First slide, please.” The hall lights dimmed, the audience hushed, and the speaker launched into his paper – the culmination of 15 years of painstaking research. An important talk, it included everything he knew on the subject. Flitting from point to point, he realized that he was running out of time and read the paper even faster. He didn’t have much time to dwell on his complicated slides, which...

Remember what you’ve learned so far. Look at structure. Look for the main idea of the passage. Consider
the purpose for which the passage was written. What clues can you deduce from the writing style about the
author’s attitude toward the subject? Is the attitude positive? Negative? Objective? Try to pick out individual
words that further each writer’s intent and support each writer’s opinion. If it helps, underline or make notes
on important points. Active reading techniques like these will keep you focused on some very detailed reading
If you say, “The cat's out of the bag” instead of “The secret is given away,” you're using an idiom. The meaning
of an idiom is different from the actual meaning of the words used. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a
proverb. Proverbs are old but familiar sayings that usually give advice. Both idioms and proverbs are part of
our daily speech. Many are very old and have interesting histories. See how many of these sayings you know. ...
