  • Recent studies have shown that differences in life history may lead to consistent inter-individual variation in behavioural traits, so-called behavioural syndromes, animal personalities or temperaments. Consis- tencies of behaviours and behavioural syndromes have mainly been studied in non-cooperative species. Insights on the evolution of coopera- tion could be gained from studying individual differences in life histories and behavioural traits.

  • Knowledge of thermodynamic data of copolymer solutions is a necessity for industrial and laboratory processes. Furthermore, such data serve as essential tools for understanding the physical behavior of copolymer solutions, for studying intermolecular interactions, and for gaining insights into the molecular nature of mixtures. They also provide the necessary basis for any developments of theoretical thermodynamic models. Scientists and engineers in academic and industrial research need such data and will benefit from a careful collection of existing data.

  • As even these preliminary comments should indicate, Hollywood has experienced a rich and dynamic history. The aim of this chapter is to chart that history in more detail and also to trace the efforts of film crit- ics and scholars to make sense of it. Journalistic film criticism dates back to Hollywood’s earliest years, and the film industry always has been subject to heavy coverage in both the trade and popular press. But the systematic scholarly study of Hollywood did not really take hold, interestingly enough, until after Hollywood’s postwar collapse.

  • Why is this treatment fair? Why don’t money funds have to report a market valueNAV? Because the securities inmoneymarket funds are of very high quality and have only a very short time tomaturity. As a result, the odds are very high that investors will get their money back when the securities come due and that their values won’t vary much between now and then. That means that the movements in the fund’s NAV will be small—usually less than $0.005 or one-half cent per share.

  • Several attempts have been made to analyze the impacts of air pollution on wildlife . More recently, research for WWF has assessed the impacts on wildlife through a literature survey which identified effects on 1,300 species, including 11 mammals, 29 birds, 10 amphibians, 398 higher plants, 305 fungi, 238 lichens and 65 invertebrates, providing the most detailed survey to date 7 . In general, the studies have concentrated on either specific ecosystems, or individual groups of plants and animals.

  • As previously noted, Planned Parenthood affiliates are currently the dominant WHP providers in their markets. While Planned Parenthood clinics served slightly below half (45%) of the patients statewide (as seen in Table 4), they provided care to an even higher proportion of patients in the market areas in which they are located. In the five markets examined, Planned Parenthood affiliates serve more than half of the WHP patients. In Hidalgo and Lubbock Counties, Planned Parenthood affiliates serve more than four-fifths (84% each) of WHP patients.

  • Socioeconomic status, poverty, and race have been found to be correlated with ACSC rates [8-10]. Several studies have examined the associations between ACSCs and demographics using small areas of analysis (typically ZIP code) and have found that ACSCs are higher in lowincome areas and areas with higher concentrations of racial and ethnic minorities [11,12]. The elderly population has not been studied much in this context, because they are thought to be relatively well-insured.

  • After a few months of respite brought about mainly by the provision of longer-term liquidity by the Eurosystem in early 2012, the sovereign-debt crisis intensified again in spring. However, financial markets have recovered since July, helped by important policy decisions in the EU and the announcement of further monetary easing on both sides of the Atlantic. Sovereign yields in most vulnerable countries have receded somewhat since summer. Risk appetite appears to have improved as stock markets have recuperated the losses experienced earlier in the year.

  • The summer/winter difference in plasma volume may be related to the regularly observed summer fall in red blood cell values and total protein. In a fully dehydrated camel with 65% body water, alimentary water has been reported as 12%, which is similar to the figure for tropical cattle. The total water content of the camel is considerably greater in hot dry weather (up to 75%) than in cooler periods (down to 50%), which indicates its physiological water conserving capability.

  • Pentabromotoluene has been used as a flame retardant in polyester and other polymers, latex, textiles, rubbers and plastics. Information on trends in use and production volume is unavailable. No information was identified as to whether it is used as an additive or reactive flame retardant (Fisk et al., 2003). Pentabromotoluene has been detected at low levels in pooled samples of Herring Gull eggs in the Great Lakes basin (Gauthier et al., 2007). Low levels were also found in male plasma and egg yolk of Glaucous Gulls from the Norwegian Arctic (Verreault et al., 2007). ...

  • Most important, the need of creating network effects in the development of a cloud platform will keep low the margins for a while and will maximize the speed of diffu- sion of cloud computing between firms at the global level. Therefore, in the long run, we expect a rather competitive situation on the supply side of cloud computing. In front of these rapid evolution, it is crucial to understand the economic impact of the introduction of this general purpose technology. For sure, the diffusion of cloud computing is going to create a solid and pervasive impact on the global econ- omy.

  • In this paper, we present REED, a system for Robust and Efficient Event Detection in sensor networks that addresses this limitation, enabling the deployment of sensor networks for the types of applications described above. REED is based on TinyDB, but extends it with the ability to support joins between sensor data and static tables built outside the sensor network. This allows users to express queries that include complex time and location varying predicates over any number of conditions using join predicates over these different attributes.

  • Relatedly, controlling for the forecast error of the change in fiscal policy does not, in our application, provide a way of estimating the causal effect of fiscal policy on growth. Over the two-year intervals that we consider, changes in fiscal policy are unlikely to be orthogonal to economic developments. Thus, the forecast error of fiscal consolidation over our two-year intervals cannot be interpreted as an identified fiscal shock and cannot yield estimates of actual fiscal multipliers. A large literature seeks to identify such exogenous shifts in government spending and revenues.

  • Swidden cultivation was a major activity for local livelihoods until 1992–1993, when most of the households were resettled as part of the government’s fixed cultivation program. Called ‘327 Program’ (1992–1997), it was the first effort of the GoV to develop industrial plantations and to decentralize control over and reallocate benefit-sharing of forest resources in Vietnam (Barney 2005), in line with the ‘Doi Moi’ economic reform (which, with six major economic changes, helped Vietnam come out of the economic crisis in 1986).
