  • As a teacher, speaker, and author I've listened to countless grieving persons in the last twenty-five years. Most of what I know about grieving I've learned from their stories. I've never spoken to anyone who mourns for someone they love who does not want to continue loving them in some way. Not knowing how to continue to love brings great pain and anguish. Recently a man came up to me at a conference to say, "I want you to know how much I hated you years ago." I'd never been approached quite like that before by someone with such gentle eyes. He seemed as eager to explain as I...

  • Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that’s built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems—the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie.

  • I would like to confess that at eighteen I suddenly fell in love with Romanesque architecture, and the passion has stayed with me forever. Unfortunately, while the last part of this statement may be true, the first part, however romantic, is fundamentally distorted. The under- graduate art-history teachers at Columbia University initiated and nourished my interest in Romanesque architecture, and thoroughly shaped my approach to it. I must begin a book on this subject by thank- ing them.

  • Most of the filming took place on an old, disused stretch of the line which had been lovingly maintained by volunteers. That's where my passion for steam trains began. When we weren't filming, we took every opportunity to have a ride on the train, and, when I went back last year, it was as If time had stood still. Everything was still in place, even the gas lights on the station platform!

  • The wife of the Shah Jahan of India, the Empress Mumtaz, had 14 children and died after her last childbirth of a postpartum hemorrhage in 1630. So great was the Shah Jahan’s love for his wife that he built the world’s most beautiful tomb in her memory – the Taj Mahal1. Far away and to the north, another country was taking a different approach: in 1663, the Swedish Collegium Medicum was established.

  • The excuse for writing another history of the Reformation is the need for putting that movement in its proper relations to the economic and intellectual revolutions of the sixteenth century. The labor of love necessary for the accomplishment of this task has employed most of my leisure for the last six years and has been my companion through vicissitudes of sorrow and of joy. A large part of the pleasure derived from the task has come from association with friends who have generously put their time and thought at my disposal....

  • Some men choose to live in crowded cities;--others are pleased with the peaceful quiet of a country farm; while some love to roam through wild forests, and make their homes in the wilderness. The man of whom I shall now speak, was one of this last class. Perhaps you never heard of DANIEL BOONE, the Kentucky rifleman. If not, then I have a strange and interesting story to tell you. If, when a child was born, we knew that he was to become a remarkable man, the time and place of his birth would, perhaps, be always remembered. But as this can not be known,...

  • As our understanding of human genetics has increased at an explosive rate over the last half century, genetic knowledge has become more relevant to us and to those we love. In the 1990s and early 2000s, scientists mapped the human genome and began to understand the ways in which a variety of different genes function in human beings. Their initial goal was to gain information and insight into how the genes we are born with might affect our lives and the lives of our children.

  • My many visits to Australia were made much more enjoyable by my friendship with Phil Tresidder. Phil was a press man who covered it as it was. He wasn’t a sensationalist and he didn’t manufacture things. I have so many great memories of Phil and of Australia. I well remember playing the Augusta course with Phil the morning after my last US Masters win in 1978, and in turn playing several rounds at his home course, Bonnie Doon, in Sydney. I used to meet him at various golf tournaments around the world and enjoyed finding out what was happening in Australia.

  • republish in this little volume a few of my numerous articles that have appeared in the Secularist, the Liberal, the National Reformer, and the Freethinker, during the last five or six years. I have included nothing (I hope) of merely ephemeral interest. Every article in this collection was at least written carefully, and with an eye to more than the exigencies of the moment. In disentombing them from the cemeteries of periodical literature, where so many of their companions lie buried, I trust I have not allowed parental love to outrun discretion.
