  • In addition to an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the scientific and clinical aspects, veterinary students also need to have a grasp of the legal, ethical and social elements of veterinary practice. Thus, communication and interpersonal skills; responsible and professional behaviour, and an understanding of the business context of veterinary practice are now recognized as important areas that should be incorporated into veterinary curricula.

  • A key task for any interdisciplinary field such as law and development is to determine what each discipline aims to gain fromits interaction with the other. Law and development certainly seeks to ensure that development considerations are taken into account by lawyers, and that legal considerations are taken into account by those who study development.

  • Administrative law is an exciting topic, in particular for those with an interest in how the law seeks to control the exercise of the enormous powers of the modern state. In the development of the law generally, modern administrative law is a recent, very largely post-Second World War, phenomenon. In legal education, it has grown over the past 20 years from being a component within established constitutional law courses to being a subject in its own right. Its relationship with constitutional law, however, must not be forgotten....

  • The law which reformed the savings banks in 19833 finally allowed them to carry out all banking busi- ness for private individuals, but the corporate client business continued to be closed to them. Furthermore, the law annulled the legal form, in force since 1835 for the savings banks, of charitable bodies (in private law); they now acquired the legal form, hitherto unknown in France, of non profit- making financial institutions.

  • More importantly, the handbook is meant to be practical, and usable at various levels of distance education systems. What immediately comes to mind is the Virtual University of the Small States of the Commonwealth (VUSSC). The VUSSC is a developing and vibrant institution, and the present volume serves as a contribution to the commonwealth of knowledge that the VUSSC epitomises. Readers are urged to consult other readings to augment their insights. This will result in a considerable depth and sophistication in the use of project management skills and techniques.

  • Webster’s Third New International Dictionary defines “esthetic” as “appreciative of, responsive to, or zealous about the beautiful; having a sense …of beauty or fine culture.” Each of us has a general sense of beauty. However, our own individual expression, interpretation, and experience make it unique, however much it is influenced by culture and self-image. What one culture perceives as disfigured may be beautiful to another. Chinese women once bound their feet, and Ubangis distend their lips.

  • Highway spending, however, is not the only area where money is allocated in this fashion. According to the Congressional Research Service, the nation’s 20 busiest ports handle 80 percent of arriving oceangoing ships but account for less than 40 percent of federal Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund expenditures. 20 In the alloca- tion of funds for drinking water projects, millions of dollars are allotted every year just to ensure that every state receives at least 1 percent of the funds available.

  • Definition of long-term objectives includes the identification of key functions that will have to be performed in order to achieve reasonably effective water pollution control at all administrative levels. This evaluation and description of necessary management functions and levels should be made without giving too much consideration to the existing administrative capacity at various administrative levels. It may be assumed, for example, that there is a reasonable capacity to carry out the necessary tasks designated at each level in the long-term strategy.

  • The basic question of the longer work that volume one introduces is a deceptively simple one: What sorts of conduct may the state rightly make criminal? Philosophers have attempted to answer this question by proposing what I call "liberty-limiting principles" (or equivalently, "coercion-legitimizing principles") which state that a given type of consideration is always a morally relevant reason in support of penal legislation even if other reasons may in the circumstances outweigh it.

  • My ideas about law and technology and my ability to write this book have benefited considerably from assistance provided by many indi- viduals. I am indebted to my colleagues in the University of Massachu- setts Department of Legal Studies—Stephen Arons, Dianne Brooks, John Bonsignore, Peter d'Errico, Ronald Pipkin, and Janet Rifkin—for encouraging my research activities and for an ongoing sharing of ideas about the new technologies, and to our staff—Claude Shepard and Tami Paluca-Sackrey—for providing help in innumerable ways.

  • Older individuals encounter a panoply of legal vicissitudes, as well as other types of challenges, in their daily lives. For older persons needing medical services, it frequently is impossible to separate the clinical aspects of care from the legal (as well as ethical, financial, and public policy) elements. Medical care of the elderly is intimately affected and extensively governed by the broad array of legal considerations that are applicable to the delivery of health services in general, and many of these considerations often are exacerbated in the care of older persons.

  • Among the now considerable literature addressing masculinity there are few texts which take as the specific object of study the relationship between masculinity and the law. This book explores the diversity of the masculinities of law and bridges the critique of masculinity and the critical study of law through analysing the relation between masculinity, legal discourse and the family. It seeks to unpack representations in law of male sexuality, authority, paternity, fatherhood and male violence in the family.

  • Normally a preface will give a list of the names of friends who have taken the trouble to read drafts of the manuscript, but I have found myself spontaneously adopting a slightly different and, I believe, more rigorous course. In the final stages of writing, over the last two years or so, I have accepted offers to participate in workshops where I could attempt a dry run of my ideas. As a consequence the work has had considerable feedback, but a price of participation is that versions of parts of the work have been published or are being published....

  • Solutions to this end are two-fold. CED needs to support skill development in non- traditional fields for women. For example women learn best in non-intimidating environments, and an all-female training and construction crew would be an excellent CED activity to meet the Canadian housing shortage. At the same time, itís important to work strategically toward improving wages in traditionally female occupations, such as childcare, and sewing operators. This has frequently been done through unionization.

  • Although we appreciate the effort made to target the more risky institutions and activities, we still have some doubts about how the thresholds system for ring-fencing trading activities would be applied. It seems to be very difficult to assess which activities would fall under the threshold and which would fall outside, and moreover this will probably lead to similar legal disputes as created by the Volcker Rule.
