  • Just as the five cities of Colchester, Lincoln, York, Gloucester, and St. Albans, stand on the sites and in some fragmentary measure bear the names of five Roman municipalities, so Isca Dumnoniorum, now Exeter, appears to have been a cantonal capital developed out of one of the great market centres of the Celtic tribes, and as such it was the most westerly of the larger Romano-British towns. • In many ways this book began about 50 years ago with another book about baseball. When I was growing up in Wayne, New Jersey, in the 1950s, I had two passions—baseball and books. Written well before Lawrence Ritter’s classic, The Glory of Their Times, Carmichael’s book is comprised of brief accounts of the memorable moments of legendary players.

  • In grave problems of history, such as the establishment of empires, the discovery and settlement of countries, or the rise and fall of dynasties, the knowledge of the truth or falsity of the legendary narrative will be of importance, because the value of history is impaired by the imputation of doubt.
