Intensive Agriculture: The agriculture sector is specialized in all aspects of agricultural production, including machinery used in farming, animal husbandry, or in processing agricultural products . Intensive agricultural production with large input sources, including the use of chemicals kill worms, herbicides, fertilizers, selective breeding and research of new varieties and a high degree of mechanization.
It was usual for Dr. Norton for a short time on each farm visited in his time

The University of Queensland, together with its Vietnamese partner institutions, propose a CARD project to enhance the teaching and research capacity of staff in the three institutions. This will be achieved through a project targeting agroforestry systems for livestock feeding in the northern provinces of Vietnam. developed called the ‘improved VAC’ In traditional VAC systems the manure from farm animals is
released into fish ponds whereas in the ‘Improved VAC’ the manure is used for earthworm culture.
The worm production is then used to feed high value fish species in tanks.
The project is to transfer a small suite of laboratory technologies to develop a capability in Vietnam for the diagnosis and control of the major disease of pigs, causing financial loss to both large and small scale farmers. The project inputs do not finish at that point, but further include the provision of training to ensure that the benefits to be derived from the enhanced technological capability will be available to farmers. The overall objective of the project is to reduce the use of N fertilizer use on legumes soybean and groundnut in Vietnam through by increasing legume inoculants. Replace N fertilizer with legume inoculants will provide both economic benefits and environmental benefits for farmers and reduce financial stress for poor farmers by reducing input costs. The approach is to raise awareness and demand for inoculants through an expanded program including live demonstrations of the benefits of inoculants and training in the functions and their use.
The development of goat production system in Vietnam has been boosted by the government of Vietnam through the establishment and support for research centers goats and rabbits Shanxi in the north of Vietnam. Detailed assessment of impacts of more than 50 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) in 11 provinces through
which over 2,000 farmers were trained from 2005 to 2006 has shown many beneficial effects. Farmers
have increased knowledge and their skills in planting and protecting citrus trees and at the same time
they have increase awareness of the recording and post-harvest storage, marketing and especially the
changes in farming practices significantly after participating in FFS.
The culture of striped catfish, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (Sauvage), or “ca tra” in Vietnamese in
the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, can be considered as a unique aquatic farming system in many ways.
Production is the fastest growth recorded in any aquaculture sector, ever, based on a single species,
superseding the production per unit for any form of primary production. Stripped catfish aquaculture
now need to be improved in many aspects and environmental issues need to be paid more attention to
ensure the sustainable development.
In Mekong delta, mangrove forest distributes along the coastline of 700 km and it is a homeland for mud crab in tropical areas. The mud crab becomes potential to be alternative species from failed shrimp farming. Particularly, mud crab hatchery has been introduced and operated recently at Bac lieu, Tra vinh, Soc Trang, Ben Tre, Kien giang and Ca mau provinces. However, the survival from zoea stage to crablet stage 1 is low at approximately 5%. In addition, like shrimp rearing, the mud crab hatchery is using antibiotic as major treatment to prevent bacteria and fungi.
To enhance the local capacity for teaching, research and extension in agriculture and rural development, the QBII, AFFS, DPI proposes to focus its project on the key priority area of agriculture, and livestock improvement in Vietnam, and within these areas, to deliver activities in the disciplines of biotechnology and genetic improvement as highlighted as a priority area by the Government of Vietnam (GOV) in the Vietnam - Australia Development Cooperation Program, CARD Program Guidelines.

The activities will consist of a workshop on biopesticide selection and identification, biopesticide production and product quality control, and on application and integration into farming systems.
