Automatic story segmentation aims to locate the instances in time where a story ends and another begins. A lexical chain is formed by linking coherent lexical items chronologically. A story boundary is often associated with a significant number of lexical chains ending before it, starting after it, as well as a low count of chains continuing through it.

In this paper we analyse the relative importance of these endogeneity and measurement issues in the context of a model of early retirement decisions. We state assumptions under which we can use relatively simple methods to assess the relative importance of state dependent reporting errors in individual responses to health questions. The estimation results indicate that among respondents...

For example, a firm might possess relatively complete technical descriptions of material flows (inputs, intermediate products, emissions). These material quantities, while not explicitly translated into financial quantities, may provide rules of thumb that qualitatively inform decision-making and guard against severe errors in decision-making.

  • The business view focuses on things that impact the profit and loss (P&L) accounting of an organization. This includes sales, profit, expenses, competition, and costs. Everyone should understand their P&L: it’s what pays their salaries or their contracts. When engineering teams are unaware of how their business works, many decisions made by management will appear illogical or stupid. Thus, it’s in the interest of whoever’s responsible for business planning to help others understand their reasoning.

  • The second argument is related to proprietary information and specific human capital. By concentrating ownership, decision rights can be given to individuals who possess specific knowledge (Jensen and Meckling, 1992; Christie, Joye, and Watts, 1993). One benefit of co-locating decision rights with specific knowledge is that the leakage of the specific knowledge to competitors is prevented and the transferring cost of the specific knowledge is avoided. This benefit is great in East Asia where political lobbying activities are common and lucrative.

They normally occur in association with each other in such a way as to manifest Gestalt structures of different types, and such structures, too, may be beautiful or ugly.
