  • The names Bloch and Geitner are synonymous with machinery maintenance and reliability for process plants. They save companies like Dow and Equilon millions of dollars a year by extending the life of rotating machinery in their plants. Extending the life of existing machinery is the name of the game in the process industries, not designing new machinery. This series by Bloch and Geitner was the first and is still the best, most comprehensive source for doing just that.

  • This book addresses, in a simplistic manner, the proper principles and techniques in “Best Maintenance Practices—Mechanical.” If these principles and techniques are followed, they will result in a serious reduction in “self-induced failures.” This book is a tool that should be carried and referenced by all mechanical maintenance personnel. A number of surveys conducted in industries throughout the United States have found that 70% of equipment failures are self-induced.

  • Machinery reliability management in the process industries can be divided into three phases: equipment selection and pre-erection reliability assurance, preparation for effective startup, and post-startup reliability assurance and maintenance cost reduction. All of these phases are important; they are intertwined and merit equal attention. The techniques and procedures described in this text cover essential elements of each phase; they have been critically examined and have led to substantially improved reliability and maintenance efficiencies.

  • The authors use their decades of experience and draw upon real-world examples to demonstrate that the application of their techniques provides a basis for equipment management, uptime maximization, and reduced maintenance costs. The text explores reliability assessment techniques such as Failure Mode, Effect Analysis, and Fault Tree Analysis of commonly encountered rotating machinery. These are all highly effective techniques that the engineer can apply to maximize uptime and thereby maximize production and profitability.

  • Fundamental Requirements of Effective Preventive/Predictive Maintenance could eliminate almost 98% of the failures. Note the word “proper,” meaning that no new problems are injected. That also means, however, that costs will be higher than need be since components will be replaced before the end of their useful life, and more labor is required. Once the threshold set point has been determined, it should be monitored to detect when it is exceeded. The investment in monitoring depends on the period over which deterioration may occur, means of detection, and benefit value.

  • In the past, many a good Machinery Manager was “made” through many years of experience, and also through many costly mistakes. These “experts” passed on their experience to the people they worked with, but seldom could experience gained in one particular location prepare someone for the multitude of things that can go wrong. It is because of this that the authors must be commended for their effort to disseminate not only their experience, but also the lessons they learned from many other experts....

  • The situation has not changed. As this third edition goes to press, there is an even greater need to seek guidelines, procedures, and techniques that have worked for our colleagues elsewhere. Collecting these guidelines for every machinery category, size, type, or model would be almost impossible, and the resulting encyclopedia would be voluminous and outrageously expensive.

If motor is bad, remove and repair.Diagnosing Pump and Seal Problems In the Shop While the pump is being repaired it is advisable to carefully examine every component. A recommended procedure is to match mark all parts prior to disassembly and to make the following checks while dismantling the pump:

  • Overdue work should be tracked and brought up-to-date. Preventive maintenance scheduling should make sure that the interval is maintained between preventive actions. For example, if a preventive task for May is done on the thirtieth of the month, the next monthly task should be done during the last week of June. It is foolish to do a preventive maintenance task on May 30th and another June 1st, just to be able to say one was done each month. In the case of preventive maintenance, the important thing is not the score but how the game was played....

  • Machinery Component Maintenance and Repair Maintenance work order planning and scheduling continues to be a largely manual set of procedures throughout the hydrocarbon processing industry. There are, however, several systems which support daily work planning and scheduling. One such system is a skills inventory file that provides daily information on available personnel for use in manual planning and scheduling of maintenance work.
