  • The idea of restoration is not new. Life, as it happens, is full of accidents, mishaps, and untoward events, from breaking a tool to growing old and dying, and the desire to avoid the consequences of these events by reversing or undoing them in order to return to some happier previous or “original” condition seems to be as old as our species. It is the root aspiration behind religion, that oldest of human institutions. It is also a constant theme of both public and private life, and it may even be grounded in the capacity for self-repair that is a peculiarity of life itself....

  • Since the beginning of time, philosophers, visionaries, and great spiritual leaders have talked about the natural abundance of the universe. The difference between being aware of our natural abundance and owning a hefty portion of it is one of the main lessons we come to this earth to learn. We live in a three-dimensional world that reflects back to us the energy, words, feelings, and thoughts we put out. Unfortunately when we come to this planet we're not well versed in how to manifest our desires so it takes us time to learn it. But that in itself is a great...

  • Because American ecocriticism, as a movement, is only about a dozen years old, generalizations about it are hard to make and still harder to validate.1 So I want to begin, not by describing the principles and practices of ecocriticism in any detail (in fact, that is something I want to delay, especially as regards the practices, until chapter four), but by looking at what seems to be, for many of its adherents, ecocriticism’s moment of origin, which is threefold in its implications.

  • Natural gas is a vital component of the world's supply of energy and an important source of many bulk chemicals and speciality chemicals. It is one of the cleanest, safest, and most useful of all energy sources, and helps to meet the world’s rising demand for cleaner energy into the future. However, exploring, producing and bringing gas to the user or converting gas into desired chemicals is a systematical engineering project, and every step requires thorough understanding of gas and the surrounding environment.

  • We thank the University of Washington Department of Economics for sponsoring ‘Frontiers in Natural Resource and Environmental Economics’, a conference in honor of Gardner M. Brown, Jr., that led to this book. In particular, we thank Richard Parks for his efforts in planning a wonderful event and helping to lay the foundation for this book; Neil Bruce, who sup- ported and encouraged us to plan a conference worthy of Gardner’s career; and Gary Waterman who helped to make the event, and in turn this book, a reality.

  • (BQ) Ebook Daylighting Natural Light in Architecture offers a general theory and introduction to the use of natural light in architecture.Phillips makes a rational argument for considering daylight first, outlining the arguments in favour of a daylight approach, and goes on to show, through a series of beautifully illustrated case studies, how architects have created buildings in which natural light has been shown to play a major strategic role in the development of the design of a building.

  • Tami seems happier than I have ever seen her. She stands confidently in the sunshine, her long white gown ruffling in the breeze. It is not just the fact that she is a bride on her wedding day that makes her beautiful. She actually has radiance about her, in her face, in her step, and especially in her laughter. And it is very inspiring to see her in this way. A few years ago, Tami first came to see me for her long-term debilitating fatigue. It seemed to start 13 years prior, just after a bout with a serious flu with characteristics of infectious mononucleosis. Even at...

  • The ‘ideology’ of professional regulation can be viewed not simply as a mask for the profession’ s activities but is implicated in the conditions that make accountancy possible. The discourses that surround professions and are promoted by professionals are understood to form an integral part of the social practices that facilitate, maintain and promote the occupation.

  • Lotfi Zadeh, the father of fuzzy logic, coined the phrase computing with words (CWW) to describe a methodology in which the computation objects are words drawn from a natural language. This text explains how to implement CWW for making subjective judgments using the three components of a Perceptual Computer (encoder, CWW engines, and decoder) and then providing detailed applications. The coverage divides the content into application chapters and detail chapters, including brief summaries of detail chapters for readers more interested in applications.

  • For a natural language access to database system to be practical it must achieve a good match between the capabilities of the user and the requirements of the task. The user brings his own natural language and his own style of interaction to the system. The task brings the questions that must be answered and the database domaln+s semantics. All natural language access systems achieve some degree of success. But to make progress as a field, we need to be able to evaluate the degree of this success. For too long, the best we have menaged has been to...

  • In recent years tree kernels have been proposed for the automatic learning of natural language applications. Unfortunately, they show (a) an inherent super linear complexity and (b) a lower accuracy than traditional attribute/value methods. In this paper, we show that tree kernels are very helpful in the processing of natural language as (a) we provide a simple algorithm to compute tree kernels in linear average running time and (b) our study on the classification properties of diverse tree kernels show that kernel combinations always improve the traditional methods. ...

  • Could it be that we have unfairly neglected French contributions to green theory because of words written more than 350 years ago?1 It was a sixteenth-century Frenchman who, in the opinion of many green thinkers, penned the most notorious line in the history of Western philosophy. René Descartes (1637: 40) proposed that we “make ourselves masters and possessors of nature”2 by subjecting our material environment first to rational analysis and then to technological control.

Six realms are compared: economic interdependence, religious divisions, third party interventions, leadership, political culture and violence. The author also sheds light on the nature of ethnicity as well as the limits of negotiation politics.

  • A lexicon is an essential component in a generation system but few efforts have been made to build a rich, large-scale lexicon and make it reusable for different generation applications. In this paper, we describe our work to build such a lexicon by combining multiple, heterogeneous linguistic resources which have been developed for other purposes. Novel transformation and integration of resources is required to reuse them for generation.

  • Knowledge acquisition is a serious bottleneck for natural language understanding systems. For this reason, large-scale linguistic resources have been compiled and made available by organizations such as the Linguistic Data Consortium (Comlex) and Princeton University (WordNet). Systems making use of these resources can greatly accelerate the development process by avoiding the need for the developer to re-create this information. In this paper we describe how we integrated these large scale linguistic resources into our natural language understanding system. ...
