  • Normal functioning of reproductive systems of male and female, no doubt is expected of all individuals. But one of the vagaries of nature is aberration of this function. While fertility is an essential ingredient for survival and continuity of species, not all couples are capable of furthering their families. So the problem of infertility finds its place in the recorded history of ancient civilisations of Babylonia, Persia and Greece.1 Goddesses of fertility, fertility rites, and superstitions encompassing the process of birth are mentioned in the history of these civilisations.

  • The male reproductive system is adapted for internal fertilization. The penis is a structure that has evolved to deposit sperm safely within the female’s body. The tube that passes through the penis, the urethra, has two functions. It is the pathway for sperm out of the body as well as the pathway for urine to leave the body after having been stored in the uri- nary bladder. At the time of sexual excitement, a valve closes. This valve prevents the bladder from releasing urine. At the same time, nerve impulses from the brain cause blood vessels in the penis to relax.

  • We conducted the study at a private facility in Washington State, USA. The animals at the facility were mainly or- phaned individuals that were housed in captivity for huma- nitarian reasons. The study was conducted under a license from the State of Washington, USA. Animals were kept in three outdoor enclosures, each c. 1500m2 in size. The enclosures consisted of mature conifer and hardwood forest enriched with water bodies and logs for climbing. The animals were fed commercial mink food mixed with offal provided by local elk and deer hunters.

  • Variation in the morphology of the adult male reproductive system among different groups of Hymenoptera offer characteristics that help studies of behavior and the evolutionary history of this group. The objective of this study was to describe the adult male reproductive system of the wasp Polistes versicolor versicolor Olivier (Vespidae: Polistini). The reproductive systems were dissected, fixed and embedded for light microscopy. In P. v. versicolor, the reproductive system includes a pair of testes, each one with three fusiform follicles.

  • Everyone loves the news stories about the taxi driverwho delivers a baby for the woman who could not get to the hospital on time. At some point each of us asks ourselves with awe for the first time, “Where did I come from?” It has been said of the body that it is “fearfully and wonderfully made.” How true this is of the reproductive systems on which the survival of our species depends. In this chapter, you will study the systems of the human body responsible for our being here: the male and the female reproduc- tive systems....

  • Insemination skills of 37 inseminators participating in AI programmes supported by the government, farmers’ cooperatives and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) were evaluated during 11 December 2001 and 8 May 2002 in 4 batches. Individual inseminators were asked to thaw a straw of frozen semen. The thawing time adopted by the inseminators and the temperature of the water used were recorded. They were then asked to simulate an insemination by depositing gentian violet dye in the genital tracts removed from slaughtered cows.

  • The field of molecular imaging/nuclear medicine continues to build excitement for the medical community as a whole. To be able to visualize fundamental molecular and biochemical processes in patients in a meaningful way has truly become reality. Of all the available molecular probes and tools it is clear that FDG with PET-CT is one of the true clinical success stories. Very few would have been able to predict the eventual impact of a simple glucose analog as a marker for imaging cancer, hibernating myocardium, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and many other important disease processes....

  • The growing tissue then begins to release more hormones to keep everything in the right condition. How- ever, if fertilization does not occur, the continued preparations in the uterus are unnecessary. The body realizes this near the end of the four- week period of the menstrual cycle. At this time, the level of LH decreases, the corpus luteum breaks down, and the level of progesterone decreases. Without this hormone, the uterine lining no longer remains intact. Instead, the lining breaks down.
