  • Statistical analysis has also meant that no generalisation regarding the kind of student least likely to improve (or likely to regress) can be reliably made. Nevertheless, it is interesting to consider the characteristics of each of the individuals who did regress in their IELTS Test results. Table 12 gives data relating to the six students whose IELTS Test results in Test 2 were lower than in Test 1. Five of the six students who regressed were studying Nursing and four were of East or South Asian language background. Four were in the older age group and four had an...

  • Flow cytometry is a technology that simultaneously measures and analyses multiple physical characteristics of single particles, usually cells, as they flow in a fluid stream through a beam of light. The properties measured include a particle’s relative size (represented by forward angle light scatter), relative granularity or internal complexity (represented by right-angle scatter), and relative fluorescence intensity.

  • In the light of changes to health and safety law, and the continuing development of best practice by the event industry, the guide has been reviewed and revised. The advice in this publication has been tried and tested and lays down a firm foundation on which to organise health and safety at music events. Many of the chapters can be applied to other types of event which, although not necessarily having a musical theme, share some of the common characteristics of music events. This publication will enable event organisers, local authorities, the emergency services...

  • In section 2, there is an illustration of the source and types of industrial contaminants in many parts of the world. It is essential to understand the characteristic of industrial discharge in order to have an idea for ways to reduce or remove the contaminants for a sustainable tomorrow. It is required to understand the impacts of industrial waste to the environment (freshwater, seawater, land) in order to design highly efficient treatment and developing effective remedial methods.

  • The water-soluble crude polysaccharides obtained from the liquid culture broth of Cordyceps militaris by ethanol precipitation were fractionated by DEAE cellulose and Sepharose CL-6B column chromatography. This fractionation process resulted in three polysaccharide fractions that were termed CPSN Fr I, CPSN Fr II, and CPSN Fr III. Of the fractions, CPSN Fr II was able to upregulate the functional events mediated by activated macrophages, such as production of nitric oxide (NO) and expression of cytokines (IL-1 and TNF-).

  • In this book for the optimisation of assembly conveyor lines we are dealing with series part production featured by a medium complexity degree and a medium number of individual components and assembly technique alternatives. Modern production techniques for medium to large series products or mass production usually involve assembly conveyor lines. They still use hand labour more or less automated. The aim is to have monotonous and similar in type operations or such causing fatigue, stress and production traumas, gradually replaced by automated assembly cycles, means and techniques.

  • Over time, they have developed various characteristics to help them survive, which leads to plant diversity. It is essential to have regular assessments of the conservation status of all plant species, in order to prioritize those in need of conservation action and to provide a measure of the success of actions being taken. The improvement of cultivated plants considerably depends on the extent of genetic variability available within the species. Evaluation of different genotypes, varieties, population, etc.

  • Both infrared and Raman spectroscopy are extremely powerful analytical techniques for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. However, neither technique should be used in isolation, since other analytical methods may yield important complementary and/or confirmatory information regarding the sample. Even simple chemical tests and elemental analysis should not be overlooked and techniques such as chromatography, thermal analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance, atomic absorption spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy, etc.

  • In classification, we wish to construct a model from a set of historical data. The model should describe a predetermined set of data classes. For example, in traditional direct marketing there are usually two predetermined classes, namely the “responder” class and the “non-responder” class. An observation or sample is a record representing an entity, e.g. a customer. Each observation is associated with a certain number of characteristic attributes and belongs to exactly one of the predetermined classes.

  • Many branchiopod crustaceans are endowed with extracellular, high-molecular-weight hemoglobins whose exact structural characteristics have remained a matter of conjecture. By using a broad spectrum of techniques, we provide precise and coherent information on the hemoglobin of one of the phylogenetically ‘oldest’ extant branchiopods, the tadpole shrimp Triops cancriformis.

  • While there is little evidence of significant recent changes in agrarian structure in land scarce countries (Lipton 2009), many land-abundant countries are characterized by rising investment in large-scale farming based on a nonfamily corporate model, a trend that can but need not be accompanied by growing concentration of land ownership (Deininger et al. 2011, UNCTAD 2009). Table 1 provides characteristics of a sample of very large farming operations in land abundant countries or regions within countries.

  • There are many different types of upholstered chairs and sofas, and they vary widely in quality. Most of the quality characteristics are similar for all upholstered items. There are, however, a few home furnishing items such as recliners and sleeper sofas that have additional quality characteristics. A high price tag does not necessarily indicate quality. High-quality and low-quality upholstered furniture can be found in all price ranges. High-quality upholstery is difficult to evaluate because you cannot see inside the furniture. There are, however, methods of determining quality.

Materials exist for separate observations on their oral tales, fictitious and historical; their hieroglyphics, music, and poetry; and the grammatical structure of the languages, their principles of combination, and the actual state of their vocabulary. The former topic has been selected as the commencement of the series.

  • The structure of the O-polysaccharide of the lipopolysaccharide from a diarrheal strain isolated in Bangladesh was studied with sugar, and methylation analysis, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and partial acid hydrolysis. The strain was first designated as Hafnia alvei, but later found to be a possible new species in the genus Escherichia. Two different polysaccharides were detected, a major and a minor one. The structure of the major polysaccharide is given below, while the structure of the minor one was not investigated. ...

  • Patients with diabetes mellitus suffer from an increased incidence of complications including cardiovascular disease and cataracts; the mechanisms responsible for this are not fully understood. One characteristic of such complications is an accumulation of advanced glycation end-products formed by the adduction of glucose or species derived from glucose, such as low-molecular mass aldehydes, to proteins.
