  • There are lots of fun, practical activities involving listening, doing and creating. Progression is carefully developed, introducing students to the written language gradually; the first book contains mostly listenings and practical activities, and each successive level contains vocabulary and language activities matched to the exercise types and skills of students of that level. Self-assessment is possible thanks to systematic revision activities for individual use. Each volume has a removable insert with the audio tapescripts for the listening activities and answers to the activities....

Use one word to complete each gap in the sentences. In some cases, there may be more than one alternative answer, but you should just give one of them.

  • If your car doesn’t start in the morning, you should check three things first: the battery, the fuel level and the spark plugs. It is easy to repair three faults. If the battery is flat, you should recharge it. If it doesn’t work, you should replace it. If the petrol tank is empty, fill it up. If the spark plugs are dirty, clean them, and if the gap in a spark plug is too narrow or too wide, adjust it to the correct width. Read the text and match these pictures in Figure 7.1 with words from the passage: If your car still doesn’t start, the petrol pump may...

  • The book was originally dedicated to my “home team”: wife, Jean; son, Charlie; and daughter, Claire. Also to Richard “Dick” Davis of Chanute, Kansas. Dick’s tremendous heart and dedication toward recognizing and establishing the historic sites in Humboldt, Kansas, for Walter Johnson and George Sweatt only begin to tell the story. His passion for the history and glory of the game is matched only by his courage and sparkling optimism, and it is because of people like Dick (and his wife, Gloria) that a book like this can exist in the first place. Thank you, my friend.

  • The front page of the Sunday New York Times is a forum reserved for the most important news of our nation and culture. So it seems fitting that the edition of July 8, 2001, carried a story on the discovery of evidence showing that young men were playing an organized brand of baseball in Manhattan as early as 1823. This, of course, was twentythree years before the New York Knickerbockers played the first match under a written set of rules at Hoboken, New Jersey, long considered a watershed moment for the organization of formal baseball teams.

  • If ever there was a match made in heaven, it’s the marriage of baseball and statistics and, as in all happy marriages, each partner contributes its most valuable assets: • Baseball, its sheer visual beauty, joy of competition, the thrill of bat meeting ball, ball meeting glove, pregnant pauses that culminate in seconds of excitement and agony. As the eminent philosopher–baseball fan Morris R. Cohen put it, an “extraordinarily rich multiplicity of movements.” • Statistics and their pliability as an analytical tool.

  • For five years I have been lecturing in a school of physical education (it could equally be described as a department of human movement, exercise science or kinesiology) where I teach a compulsory pedagogy course to approximately 220 undergraduates. The course has not been particularly popular with students, the most common objection being – ‘I’m not going to be a teacher, so why do I have to do pedagogy?’ Over the years I have tried different strategies in an effort to make the course more obviously relevant to students without compromising its educational content....

  • This book, as the synopsis says, contains over 700 verbs with over 1000 meanings. But I think this a weakness rather than a strength. Firstly, the phrasal verbs are grouped 16 to a page with one exercise per verb. The exercise is either a gap-fill, a multiple-choice or matching two parts of a dialogue. In itself this is not exactly imaginative, but the important fact is that it is impossible for a person learning English to assimmilate – much less activate – phrasal verbs in this way.

  • Equilibrium, the retailers use purely mixed strategies for both prices leading to a price dispersion. If the two goods are complements the prices of the two goods within every shop will be, at least locally, negatively correlated while if they are substitutes or have independent valuations the two prices will be randomized independently. Theoretical literature on multiproduct price competition is relatively scarce. The inherent diculty lies in an ability of consumers to mix and match goods o ered by di erent retailers leading to a complicated pattern of choices.
