  • We introduce a new method for learning to detect grammatical errors in learner’s writing and provide suggestions. The method involves parsing a reference corpus and inferring grammar patterns in the form of a sequence of content words, function words, and parts-of-speech (e.g., “play ~ role in Ving” and “look forward to Ving”). At runtime, the given passage submitted by the learner is matched using an extended Levenshtein algorithm against the set of pattern rules in order to detect errors and provide suggestions. ...

  • In this paper, we describe a machine translation system called PalmTree which uses the "patternbased" approach as a fundamental framework. The pure pattern-based translation framework has several issues. One is the performance due to using many rules in the parsing stage, and the other is inefficiency of usage of translation patterns due to the exact-matching. To overcome these problems, we describe several methods; pruning techniques for the former, and introduction of example-based processing for the latter. ...

  • This paper describes a simple patternmatching algorithm for recovering empty nodes and identifying their co-indexed antecedents in phrase structure trees that do not contain this information. The patterns are minimal connected tree fragments containing an empty node and all other nodes co-indexed with it.

  • We present a pattern matching method for compiling a bilingual lexicon of nouns and proper nouns from unaligned, noisy parallel texts of Asian/Indo-European language pairs. Tagging information of one language is used. Word frequency and position information for high and low frequency words are represented in two different vector forms for pattern matching. New anchor point finding and noise elimination techniques are introduced. We obtained a 73.1% precision. We also show how the results can be used in the compilation of domain-specific noun phrases. ...

  • In Information Retrieval (IR) in general and Question Answering (QA) in particular, queries and relevant textual content often significantly differ in their properties and are therefore difficult to relate with traditional IR methods, e.g. key-word matching. In this paper we describe an algorithm that addresses this problem, but rather than looking at it on a term matching/term reformulation level, we focus on the syntactic differences between questions and relevant text passages.

  • We propose a method for analyzing long complex and compound sentences that utilizes global structure analysis with domain-specific pattern grammar. Previously, long sentence analysis with global information used the following methods: two-level analysis--global structure analysis of long sentences with domain-independent function words and parsing of their constituents[Doi et al., 1991], and pattern matching--adaptation of domain-specific fixed pattern to input sentences. By utilizing domaindependent information the latter method could analyze long sentences of that domain.

Because traditional software alone pattern matching approaches can no longer meet the high throughput of today’s networking, many hardware approaches are proposed to accelerate pattern matching.

  • The field of digital image segmentation is continually evolving. Most recently, the advanced segmentation methods such as Template Matching, Spatial and Temporal ARMA Processes, Mean Shift Iterative Algorithm, Constrained Compound Markov Random Field (CCMRF) model and Statistical Pattern Recognition (SPR) methods form the core of a modernization effort that resulted in the current text. This new edition of "Advanced Image Segmentation" is but a reflection of the significant progress that has been made in the field of image segmentation in just the past few years.

  • The paper seeks to assess how a major policy regime change – such as the introduction of the currency board in Bulgaria – affects the flow of bank credit to the corporate sector. An attempt is made to identify the determinants of corporate credit separately from the viewpoint of lenders and borrowers. The estimated credit supply and credit demand equations provide empirical evidence of important changes in microeconomic behavioral patterns which can be associated with the policy regime change.

  • The cache diffusion algorithm then works as follows. Every time the root basestation receives a tuple that does not join, it sends the maximal ERD which that tuple inter- sects one hop in the direction that the tuple came from. This node then checks its local value cache for tuples that are contained within this ERD. If one is found, this value and any other values that overlap with the ERD are re- moved from the local value cache, and the ERD is added to the ERD cache table with priority 1. If no match is found, then the ERD...

  • In Practical Vim, I demonstrate by showing examples rather than by describing them. That’s not easy to do with the written word. To show the steps taken during an interactive editing session, I’ve adopted a simple notation that illustrates the keystrokes and the contents of a Vim buffer side by side. If you’re keen to jump to the action, you can safely skip this chapter for now. It describes each of the conventions used throughout Practical Vim, many of which you’ll find to be self-explanatory. At some point, you’ll probably come across a symbol and wonder what it stands for.

  • This volume contains contributions written by authors who have all worked in some capacity with Judith Bishop during her distinguished career. When Judith reached a certain milestone in her age (and we will leave the reader to figure out which one), we had the idea of putting together this book in recognition of her career and her accomplishments. We contacted various researchers and industry professionals who have worked with Judith and asked them if they would be willing to contribute material for this book. Their responses were overwhelmingly positive.

  • We describe an algorithm for recovering non-local dependencies in syntactic dependency structures. The patternmatching approach proposed by Johnson (2002) for a similar task for phrase structure trees is extended with machine learning techniques. The algorithm is essentially a classifier that predicts a nonlocal dependency given a connected fragment of a dependency structure and a set of structural features for this fragment.

  • The /usr/bin/awk utility scans each input filename for lines that match any of a set of patterns specified in prog. The prog string must be enclosed in single quotes (') to protect it from the shell. For each pattern in prog there may be an associated action performed when a line of a filename matches the pattern. The set of pattern-action statements may appear literally as prog or in a file specified with the -f progfile option. Input files are read in order; if there are no files, the standard input is read. The file name '-' means the standard input....
