  • This book is intended primarily for students on economics, business studies and management courses. It assumes very little prerequisite knowledge, so it can be read by students who have not undertaken a mathematics course for some time. The style is informal and the book contains a large number of worked examples. Students are encouraged to tackle problems for themselves as they read through each section. Detailed solutions are provided so that all answers can be checked.

  • This book is based onmy notes fromlectures to students of electrical, elec- tronic, and computer engineering at South Bank University. It presents a first year degree/diploma course in engineering mathematics with an emphasis on important concepts, such as algebraic structure, symme- tries, linearity, and inverse problems, clearly presented in an accessible style. It encompasses the requirements, not only of students with a good maths grounding, but also of those who, with enthusiasm and motiva- tion, can make up the necessary knowledge.

  • Robotics and computer vision are interdisciplinary subjects at the intersection of engineering and computer science. By their nature, they deal with both computers and the physical world. Although the former are in the latter, the workings of computers are best described in the black-and-white vocabulary of discrete mathematics, which is foreign to most classical models of reality, quantum physics notwithstanding. This class surveys some of the key tools of applied math to be used at the interface of continuous and discrete. It is not on robotics or computer vision.

  • In this article we study several homology theories of the algebra E ∞ (X) of Whitney functions over a subanalytic set X ⊂ Rn with a view towards noncommutative geometry. Using a localization method going back to Teleman we prove a Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg type theorem for E ∞ (X), when X is a regular subset of Rn having regularly situated diagonals. This includes the case of subanalytic X. We also compute the Hochschild cohomology of E ∞ (X) for a regular set with regularly situated diagonals and derive the cyclic and periodic cyclic theories. ...

  • In this paper we solve the subconvexity problem for Rankin-Selberg L-functions L(f ⊗ g, s) where f and g are two cuspidal automorphic forms over Q, g being fixed and f having large level and nontrivial nebentypus. We use this subconvexity bound to prove an equidistribution property for incomplete orbits of Heegner points over definite Shimura curves. L(f, s),

  • The divisibility properties of Dirichlet L-functions in infinite families of characters have been studied by Iwasawa, Ferrero and Washington. The families considered by them are obtained by twisting an arbitrary Dirichlet character with all characters of p-power conductor for some prime p. One has to distinguish divisibility by p (the case considered by Iwasawa and FerreroWashington [FeW]) and by a prime = p (considered by Washington [W1], [W2]). Ferrero and Washington proved the vanishing of the Iwasawa µ-invariant of any branch of the Kubota-Leopoldt p-adic L-function. ...
