Mathematical modelling is the process of formulating an abstract model in terms of mathematical language to describe the complex behaviour of a real system. Mathematical models are quantitative models and often expressed in terms of ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations. Mathematical models can also be statistical models, fuzzy logic models and empirical relationships. In fact, any model description using mathematical language can be called a mathematical model.

The new monograph ‘‘Mathematical Modeling in Mechanics of Granular Mate rials’’ written by Oxana & Vladimir Sadovskii is based on a previous Russian version published in 2008. The Russian version was significantly revised and extended. The References were updated with respect to the readers not being familiar with the Russian language. Instead of eight chapters of the Russian ori ginal version there are now ten chapters—a new chapter devoted to continua with independent rotational degrees of freedom is added....

Mathematical Modeling I – preliminary is designed for undergraduate students. Two other followup books, Mathematical Modeling II – advanced and Mathematical Modeling III – case studies in biology, will be published. II and III will be designed for both graduate students and undergraduate students. All the three books are independent and useful for study and application of mathematical modeling in any discipline.

This is the third volume in the series “Tutorial in Mathematical Biosciences”. These lectures are based on material which was presented in tutorials or developed by visitors and postdoctoral fellows of the Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI), at The Ohio State University. The aim of this series is to introduce graduate students and researchers with just a little background in either mathematics or biology to mathematical modeling of biological processes. The first volume was devoted to mathematical neuroscience, which was the focus of the MBI program in 2002–2003.

English noun/verb (N/V) pairs (contract, cement) have undergone complex patterns of change between 3 stress patterns for several centuries. We describe a longitudinal dataset of N/V pair pronunciations, leading to a set of properties to be accounted for by any computational model. We analyze the dynamics of 5 dynamical systems models of linguistic populations, each derived from a model of learning by individuals.

Finance is one of the fastest growing areas in the modern banking and corporate world. This, together with the sophistication of modern financial products, provides a rapidly growing impetus for new mathematical models and modern mathematical methods. Indeed, the area is an expanding source for novel and relevant "realworld" mathematics. In this book, the authors describe the modeling of financial derivative products from an applied mathematician's viewpoint, from modeling to analysis to elementary computation.

The final chapter of the book presents an innovative method for fluid mechanical design in which an object within the flow field is build elementbyelement. Each element is introduced into the flow, and its effect on a cost function is minimized with respect to the object’s position. An element may represent added material or a removed part of the existing structure. This chapter presents a strong degree of mathematical formality.

Mathematics in Action: Algebraic, Graphical, and Trigonometric Problem Solving, Fourth Edition, is intended to help college mathematics students gain mathematical literacy in the real world and simultaneously help them build a solid foundation for future study in mathematics and other disciplines. Our team of fourteen faculty, primarily from the State University of New York and the City University of New York systems, used the AMATYC Crossroads standards to develop this threebook series to serve a very large population of college students at the preprecalculus level.

The design of modern control systems relies on the formulation and analysis of mathematical models of dynamic physical systems. This is simply because a model is more accessible to study than the physical system the model represents.

Image registration is an emerging topic in image processing with many applications in medical imaging, picture and movie processing. The classical problem of image registration is concerned with finding an appropriate transformation between two data sets. This fuzzy definition of registration requires a mathematical modeling and in particular a mathematical specification of the terms appropriate transformations and correlation between data sets. Depending on the type of application, typically Euler, rigid, plastic, elastic deformations are considered.
