ELOE Received 21 October 2003 and in revised form 16 February 2004 We study a family of threepoint nonlocal boundary value problems (BVPs) for an nthorder linear forward diﬀerence equation. In particular, we obtain a maximum principle and determine sign properties of a corresponding Green function. Of interest, we show that the methods used for twopoint disconjugacy or rightdisfocality results apply to this family of threepoint BVPs. 1.

This paper proposes a learning method of translation rules from parallel corpora. This method applies the maximum entropy principle to a probabilistic model of translation rules. First, we define feature functions which express statistical properties of this model. Next, in order to optimize the model, the system iterates following steps: (1) selects a feature function which maximizes loglikelihood, and (2) adds this function to the model incrementally.

Maximum likelihood estimation is a fundamental method of statistical estimation; a short introduction was provided in Section 4.5.
