  • MAXIMUM PRINCIPLES FOR A FAMILY OF NONLOCAL BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS PAUL W. ELOE Received 21 October 2003 and in revised form 16 February 2004 We study a family of three-point nonlocal boundary value problems (BVPs) for an nthorder linear forward difference equation. In particular, we obtain a maximum principle and determine sign properties of a corresponding Green function. Of interest, we show that the methods used for two-point disconjugacy or right-disfocality results apply to this family of three-point BVPs. 1.

  • As WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) become increasingly common, it's becoming vital to be able to test them for proper performance and to optimize their operation. This book, written by a member of the IEEE committee that develops WLAN standards, is the first book addressing that need. It covers test equipment and methods for the RF (wireless) and physical layers of WLAN, protocols, the application layer, and manufacturing testing.

  • Gompertzian tumor growth. The growth fraction of a tumor declines exponentially over time (top). The growth rate of a tumor peaks before it is clinically detectable (middle). Tumor size increases slowly, goes through an exponential phase, and slows again as the tumor reaches the size at which limitation of nutrients or auto- or host regulatory influences can occur. The maximum growth rate occurs at 1/e, the point at which the tumor is about 37% of its maximum size (marked with an X). Tumor becomes detectable at a burden of about 109 (1 cm3) cells and kills the patient at a tumor...

  • This paper proposes a learning method of translation rules from parallel corpora. This method applies the maximum entropy principle to a probabilistic model of translation rules. First, we define feature functions which express statistical properties of this model. Next, in order to optimize the model, the system iterates following steps: (1) selects a feature function which maximizes loglikelihood, and (2) adds this function to the model incrementally.

  • Russian mathematics (later Soviet mathematics, and Russian mathematics once again) occupies a special place in twentieth-century mathematics. In addition to its well-known achievements, Russian mathematics established a unique style of research based on the existence of prominent mathematical schools. These schools were headed by recognized leaders, who became famous due to their talents and outstanding contributions to science.

  • ON THE EXISTENCE AND UNIQUENESS OF SOLUTIONS TO BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS ON TIME SCALES JOHNNY HENDERSON, ALLAN PETERSON, AND CHRISTOPHER C. TISDELL Received 13 August 2003 and in revised form 11 February 2004 This work formulates existence, uniqueness, and uniqueness-implies-existence theorems for solutions to two-point vector boundary value problems on time scales. The methods used include maximum principles, a priori bounds on solutions, and the nonlinear alternative of Leray-Schauder. 1.

  • In Sweden, a largescale experiment with the 'supportive' variant 16  was held. When the driver exceeds local speed  limits, the gas pedal would resist with more pressure. However, the driver could overrule ISA by pressing down the gas  pedal with more power. The experiment showed a decrease in speed, and a decrease in travelling time. The users  reported they were driving safer (or at least feeling so) and smoother.

  • There is a large volume of good quality evidence indicating that appropriate screening helps the detection and treatment of alcohol problems (see Annex 2 for a list of alerts). This evidence has consistently shown that screening using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) is effective within primary care, A&E, pre- and antenatal settings.

  • What to expect of this book I assume that the reader of this book will have the level of knowledge of the ECG that is contained in The ECG Made Easy, to which this is a companion volume. The ECG is indeed easy in principle, but the variations in pattern seen both in normal people and in patients with cardiac and other problems can make the ECG seem more complex than it really is. This book concentrates on these variations, and contains several examples of each abnormality. It is thus intended for anyone who understands the basics, but now wants to use the ECG to its maximum potential as a...

  • Modulation and demodulation 5.1 MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD ESTIMATION We start again with the ML principle defined in Section 3.1 of Chapter 3. After the signal despreading, vector of parameters θ to be estimated includes timing of the received symbols τ0 , phase of the received carrier θ0 , frequency offset of the received signal ν0 , amplitude of the signal A0 and data symbols an θ (τ0 , θ0 , ν0 , A0 , an ) After despreading, the narrowband signal can be represented as r(t) = s(t, θ ) + w(t) The likelihood becomes ˜ L(θ ) = C1 exp − C2...

  • In this chapter we discuss relations between information theory and statistical mechanics. We show that the canonical and grand canonical distributions can be obtained from Shannon’s principle of maximum uncertainty [1, 2, 3]. Moreover, the time evolution of the entropy of an isolated system and the H theorem are discussed.

  • ICA by Maximum Likelihood Estimation A very popular approach for estimating the independent component analysis (ICA) model is maximum likelihood (ML) estimation. Maximum likelihood estimation is a fundamental method of statistical estimation; a short introduction was provided in Section 4.5. One interpretation of ML estimation is that we take those parameter values as estimates that give the highest probability for the observations. In this section, we show how to apply ML estimation to ICA estimation.
