  • The perennially bestselling third edition of Norman A. Anderson's Instrumentation for Process Measurement and Control provides an outstanding and practical reference for both students and practitioners. It introduces the fields of process measurement and feedback control and bridges the gap between basic technology and more sophisticated systems. Keeping mathematics to a minimum, the material meets the needs of the instrumentation engineer or technician who must learn how equipment operates.

  • What can’t be measured can’t be improved. Even though Supply Chain Management is the most talked about topic today, currently no tool is available to measure any manufacturing organizations’ supply chain efficiency. Unlike productivity and or quality measurement, where the parameter can be measured objectively and expressed in unit or ratio, supply chain measurement is currently more of a qualitative statement.

  • An organization’s culture matters a lot. That’s what John Kotter and I concluded from a three-year study of the relationship between corporate culture and performance in the early 1990s. CEOs generally agree, although I’m left wondering whether some of them really believe it or whether it’s something they’ve been conditioned to say when reminded to do so. It’s confirmed by even the best (5-star) investment analysts on Wall Street, a group that we might assume would look only to financial measures in recommending investments.

  • There is an old schoolyard saying: “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me.” If all the talk about human rights violations seems sometimes to have little measurable effect, is it in the area of punitive trade mea- sures that violating States are more likely to say “ouch!” and be dissuaded from continuing along the path of either active violations of human rights or passive toleration of them in their countries? A good case can be made for trade sanctions as an instrument for bringing about a greater observance of human rights. But, as in so...

  • Until fairly recently most scientific data-gathering systems and industrial control procedures were based on electromechanical devices such as chart recorders and analogue gauges. The capability to process and analyse data was rather limited (and in some cases error prone) unless one had access to a minicomputer or mainframe. Today, that situation has changed considerably. I am sure that most potential readers of this book will be aware of the profound effect the PC has had on the way in which engineers and scientists are able to approach data-gathering tasks....

  • This Report addresses in considerable detail the consequences of hot particles on and near the skin, in the eye, ear, respiratory system, and gastrointestinal tract. Limits for exposures from hot particles are recommended. If exposures are maintained below the recommended limits, few, if any, deterministic biological effects are expected to be observed, and those effects would be transient in nature. If effects from a hot-particle exposure are observed, the result is an easily treated medical condition involving an extraordinarily small stochastic risk.

  • The field of medical imaging is advancing at a rapid pace. Imaging modalities like x-ray radiography, x-ray computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, nuclear imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and optical imaging have been used in biology and medicine to visualize anatomical structures as large as the lung and liver and as small as molecules. Ultrasound is considered the most cost-effective among them. It is used routinely in hospitals and clinics for diagnosing a variety of diseases.

The first phase was sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and focused on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). The second phase was sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and focused on the Global Precipitation Measurement mission. The report of the second phase will be published in a separate volume in 2006.

  • It is not impossible that in the minds of some persons the idea of employing gentle measures in the management and training of children may seem to imply the abandonment of the principle of authority, as the basis of the parental government, and the substitution of some weak and inefficient system of artifice and manoeuvring in its place. To suppose that the object of this work is to aid in effecting such a substitution as that, is entirely to mistake its nature and design.

  • We have developed a system that generates evaluative arguments that are tailored to the user, properly arranged and concise. We have also developed an evaluation framework in which the effectiveness of evaluative arguments can be measured with real users. This paper presents the results of a formal experiment we have performed in our framework to verify the influence of argument conciseness on argument effectiveness In the remainder of the paper, we first describe a computational framework for generating evaluative arguments at different levels of conciseness. ...

  • Polymer blends containing nylon-6 and polypropylene (PP) were prepared by using a single screw extruder. Three different types of maleic anhydride modified PP (PPMA06, PPMA1and PPMA05) were used as compabilizers to examine their effects. The properties included tensile strength, Izod impact strength, torque rheometry and extent of water absorption of the resulting blends were measured and the morphology was characterized by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The crystallization behavior of blends was analyzed by monitoring differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction.

  • This paper describes an approach to utilizing term weights for sentiment analysis tasks and shows how various term weighting schemes improve the performance of sentiment analysis systems. Previously, sentiment analysis was mostly studied under data-driven and lexicon-based frameworks. Such work generally exploits textual features for fact-based analysis tasks or lexical indicators from a sentiment lexicon. We propose to model term weighting into a sentiment analysis system utilizing collection statistics, contextual and topicrelated characteristics as well as opinionrelated properties.
