  • This paper categorically rejects the possibility of considering a wordto-word conversion as a translation. A true translation is unattainable, even by the human agent, let alone by mechanical means. However, a crude practical translation is probably achievable. The present paper deals with a scheme for the syntactic integration of Russian sentences.

  • The word “robot” was introduced by the Czech playright Karel ˇ Capek in his 1920 play Rossum’s Universal Robots. The word “robota” in Czech means simply “work.” In spite of such practical beginnings, science fiction writers and early Hollywood movies have given us a romantic notion of robots. Thus, in the 1960s robots held out great promises for miraculously revolutionizing industry overnight. In fact, many of the more far-fetched expectations from robots have failed to materialize. ...

  • Flight controls have advanced considerably throughout the years. In the earliest biplanes flown by the pioneers flight control was achieved by warping wings and control surfaces by means of wires attached to the flying controls in the cockpit. Figure 1.1 clearly shows the multiplicity of rigging and control wires on an early monoplane. Such a means of exercising control was clearly rudimentary and usually barely adequate for the task in hand.

  • The book "Applied Fracture Mechanics" presents a collection of articles on application of fracture mechanics methods to materials science, medicine, and engineering. In thirteen chapters, a wide range of topics is discussed, including strength of biological tissues, safety of nuclear reactor components, fatigue effects in pipelines, environmental effects on fracture among others. In addition, the book presents mathematical and computational methods underlying the fracture mechanics applications, and also developments in statistical modeling of fatigue.

  • Regions and gates can be made to better separate and analyze populations of interest. Furthermore, on the basis that the dyes used to stain cells have overlapping emission spectra, the compensation is normally made to reduce interference. While basic instruments may only permit the simultaneous collection of two or three fluorescence signals, the more complex and expensive research instruments mean that it is possible to obtain more than 14 parameters (Winson & Davey, 2000; Chattopadhyay et al., 2008) depending on the laser equipment utilized.

  • Encounters with Epithelial Cells Over the past decade, many bacterial pathogens have been shown to enter epithelial cells (Fig. 114-2); the bacteria often use specialized surface structures that bind to receptors, with consequent internalization. However, the exact role and the importance of this process in infection and disease are not well defined for most of these pathogens. Bacterial entry into host epithelial cells is seen as a means for dissemination to adjacent or deeper tissues or as a route to sanctuary to avoid ingestion and killing by professional phagocytes.

  • The term engineering rock mechanics is used to describe the engineering application of rock mechanics to civil, mining, petroleum and environmental engineering circumstances. The term mechanics, means the study of the equilibrium and motion of bodies, which includes statics and dynamics l. Thus, rock mechanics is the study of mechanics applied to rock and rock masses. ’Engineering rock mechanics’ is this study within an engineering context, rather than in the context of natural processes that occur in the Earth‘s crust, such as folding and faulting.

  • THE PRINCIPAL differences between the work at The University of Michigan and other work in machine translation is in the emphasis placed on the problem of multiple meaning and the approach to that problem. Our approach consists in translating small groups of words, listing in the dictionary multiple meanings under each word in the group, and finding algorithms which make it possible to choose the proper set of meanings for the group.

  • HAVING STARTED WORK on mechanical translation, we arrived at the conclusion that both the lexical meaning and the morphological shape of the word can and should be utilized in analyzing the text, and that for purposes of translation it is impractical to omit the information which can be thus obtained. The utilization of the lexical meanings of words as well as of their contexts may also affect problems of coding. These questions are extremely important to automatic translation. We based our work on the following principles: 1.

  • This article raises questions that must be solved if psychol- ogists are to develop a science of positive psychology. First, how should psychology quantify positive mental health? At present, psychology has no metric except per-haps scores of greater than 85 on the DSM-1V's Axis V (Global Assessment of Functioning). If more reliable meth- ods or assessing the relative maturity of defenses can be developed, psychology may gain a means of quantifying the theoretical formula for positive mental health that Marie Jahoda (1959) offered to psychology 40 years ago.

  • THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN undertook research, late in 1955, in the analysis of language structure for mechanical translation. Emphasis was placed on the use of the contextual structure of the sentence as a means of reducing ambiguity and on the formulation of a set of operative rules which an electronic computer could use for automatically translating Russian texts into English.

This means that the natural sciences as biology, chemistry, geography ... study only specific parts of nature and must comply with the laws of physics. For example, the chemistry of these substances are governed by the physical laws of quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and electromagnetism.
