  • The evolution of technological advances in infrared sensor technology, image processing, “smart” algorithms, knowledge-based databases, and their overall system integration has resulted in new methods of research and use in medical infrared imaging. The development of infrared cameras with focal plane arrays not requiring cooling added a new dimension to this modality. New detector materials with improved thermal sensitivity are now available and production of high-density focal plane arrays (640×480) has been achieved.

  • The idea of this book originates from a series of lectures on “Detectors Application in Medicine and Biology” that I was asked to give as part of the Academic Training Program at CERN in 1995. In preparing the series of lectures, I realized that I would be talking about detector properties and the medical applications of these detectors to the scientists and engineers who were their inventors.

  • Medicinal chemistry is a discipline at the intersection of chemistry, especially synthetic organic chemistry, and pharmacology and various other biological specialties, where they are involved with design, chemical synthesis and development for market of pharmaceutical agents (drugs). Compounds used in medical applications are most often organic compounds, which are often divided into the broad classes of small organic molecules and biologics, the latter of which are most often medicinal preparations of proteins. Inorganic and organometallic compounds are also useful as drugs.

  • Rather than focusing on earlier treatments, based largely on the simplifications of geometrical acoustics, Physical Principles of Medical Ultrasonics examines concepts of wave acoustics, introducing them in the very first chapter. Practical implications of these concepts are explored, first the generation and nature of acoustic fields, and then their formal descriptions and measurement. Real tissues attenuate and scatter ultrasound in ways that have interesting relationships to their physical chemistry, and the book includes coverage of these topics.

  • Advances in our understanding of the molecular principles underlining both health and disease has revealed the existence of many regulatory polypeptides of significant medical potential. The fact that such polypeptides are produced naturally within the body only in minute quantities initially precluded their large-scale medical application. The development in the 1970s of the twin techniques of genetic engineering and hybridoma technology marked the birth of the modern biotech era.

  • Ten years after the publication of the first edition of Introduction to Medical Immunology, the ideal immunology textbook continues to be a very elusive target. The discipline continues to grow at a brisk pace, and the concepts tend to become obsolete as quickly as we put them in writing. It is very true of immunology that the more we know, the greater our ignorance. This represents the challenge that makes teaching immunology so exceptional and writing immunology textbooks such a daunting task.

  • Engineering is the integration of art and science and involves the use of systematic knowledge based on the principles of mathematics and the physical sciences to design and develop systems that have direct practical applicability for the benefit of mankind and society. With this philosophy in mind, the importance of the engineering sciences becomes obvious, and this is especially true for the biomedical aspects, where the implications are easily identifiable. Of all the engineering sciences, biomedical engineering is considered to be the broadest.

  • Smart polymers are macromolecules capable of undergoing rapid, reversible phase transitions from a hydrophilic to a hydrophobic microstructure. These transitions are triggered by small shifts in the local environment, such as slight variations in temperature, pH, ionic strength, or the concentration of specific substances like sugars. Smart polymers have an extensive range of applications, but this book focuses solely on their roles within the fields of bioseparation and biomedicine. Until recently, polymers were considered to be passive participants within these fields.

  • Biomedical Engineering is an exciting and emerging interdisciplinary field that combines engineering with life sciences. The relevance of this area can be perceived in our everyday lives every time we go to hospital, receive medical treatment or even when we buy health products such as an automatic blood pressure monitor device. Over the past years we have experienced a great technological development in health care and this is due to the joint work of engineers, mathematicians, physicians, computer scientists and many other professionals....

  • I like playing around with words and letters. You probably know that LASER is an artificial word derived from “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. When starting my lecture on “Laser–Tissue Interactions” I tend to write this derivation on the board. I continue with “LIGHT: Lasers Irradiate Germinated and Healthy Tissues”. Why? Lasers cut everything, if appropriate laser parameters are selected. There is no shield around healthy tissue. And there is no laser that fits all sizes as some clothes do. Lasers never have been some kind of wonder instruments.

  • There are several reasons that may explain why the prevalence of heart failure is increasing: ageing of the population, the success in prolonging survival in coronary patients, and the success in postponing coronary events by effective prevention in those patients at high risk or those patients who have already survived a first event (secondary prevention) (Senni et al, 1999). Advances in medical therapy have resulted in improved survival in patients with moderate and severe heart failure, but the prognosis for end-stage heart failure patients still remains poor.
