Superior vena cava Aorta Left main coronary artery Left circumflex artery Pulmonary veins Right main coronary artery Left anterior descending artery Coronary vein Inferior vena cava Descending aorta
coronary Any structure that encircles like a crown. The term usually refers to the coronary arteries encircling the heart. It is also sometimes used as a nonmedical term for a heart attack (see myocardial infarction).
It is incredible to think that although the founders of medical ethics,
such as Hippocrates, published their works more than 2000 years
ago, the medical profession, up until now, has not had a basic,
universally used, curriculum for the teaching of medical ethics. This
first WMA Ethics Manual aims to fill that void. What a privilege it is
to introduce it to you!
The Manual’s origin dates back to the 51st World Medical Assembly
Today the emphasis in health and medical care is on prevention.
The American Medical Association Guide to Talking to Your
Doctor focuses on the importance of an effective patient-doctor
relationship in improving and maintaining your health and
reducing your health risks. Use this book as a tool to become an
informed, active healthcare participant and to take control of
your health and medical care.
A I the collection of scientific literature in
the Clark Library has already served as the background for a
number of seminars, in the most recent of them the literature of
embryology and the medical aspects of Robert Boyle's thought
were subjected to a first and expert examination. Charles W.
Bodemer, of the Division of Biomedical History, School of
Medicine, University of Washington, evaluated the embryological
ideas of that remarkable group of inquiring Englishmen,
Sir Kenelm Digby, Nathaniel Highmore, William Harvey, and
Sir Thomas Brovsme. Lester S.
This book has been written to enable health care workers to understand the principles of
managing an acute medical emergency safely and effectively. To achieve this aim it provides
a structured approach to medical emergencies, describing relevant pathophysiology
that will also help to explain physical signs and the rationale behind treatment. The first
edition of this manual (written by Terry Wardle) has undergone significant modification
directed by the working group and also, in particular, candidates from the first
The art of compliance is a craft much like that of a carpenter who learns to
work with various kinds of wood and designs. Ours is an industry wrought
with differences. While the regulations that govern FDA-regulated industries
are proscribed, how the regulations are interpreted and applied really
depends on experience and how well one has mastered the craft of compliance.
There are no proscribed procedures, but there are guideposts common
to all FDA-regulated industries, whether a firm manufactures medical
devices, pharmaceuticals, or biological products....
The publication of a medical textbook for a new or emerging field always signals a turning point—a shift
toward greater awareness of theories, basic science research, and modes of clinical practice at the cutting
edge of medicine. Essentials of Complementary and Alternative Medicine represents just such a coming of
age for an important new clinical and scientific field.
Association rules represent a promising technique to find
hidden patterns in a medical data set. The main issue about
mining association rules in a medical data set is the large
number of rules that are discovered, most of which are irrelevant.
Such number of rules makes search slow and interpretation
by the domain expert difficult. In this work, search
constraints are introduced to find only medically significant
association rules and make search more efficient.
In popular usage the term ‘profession’ has a wide variety of connotations,
spanning from a highly skilled and specialized job to any fulltime work from
which income is derived (Freidson 1986). The boundaries of interpretation are
narrower in sociology, but sociologists have also still to reach agreement about
the meaning of the term ‘profession’ and the related question of which
occupations are to count as professions.
The General Dental Council’s core ethical guidance booklet ‘Standards for dental
professionals’ and associated, supplementary guidance, emphasise that all dental
professionals are responsible for putting patients’ interests first, and acting to
Central to this responsibility is the need for dental professionals to ensure that they
are able to deal with medical emergencies that may arise in their practice.
OVER THE PAST DECADE, alternative medical therapies have played an increasingly prominent
role in American health care. In the nation’s grocery stores, homeopathic treatments and over-thecounter
herbal remedies crowd aisles that were once largely devoted to analgesics, sore throat
lozenges, and fruit-flavored, animal-shaped children’s vitamins. Eager to fill their beds and their
coffers, hospitals advertise—even celebrate—the inclusion of nontraditional medical practices.

The costs of hospital-acquired (nosocomial) and other health care– associated infections are great. It is estimated that these infections affect 2 million patients, cost $4.5 billion, and contribute to 88,000 deaths in U.S. hospitals annually. Efforts to lower infection risks have been challenged by the growing numbers of immunocompromised patients, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, fungal and viral superinfections, and invasive devices and procedures.
Marfan Syndrome (See also Chap. 357) This is an autosomal dominant disease, associated with a high risk of maternal morbidity. Approximately 15% of pregnant women with Marfan syndrome develop a major cardiovascular manifestation during pregnancy, with almost all women surviving.
Diabetes Mellitus in Pregnancy: Treatment Pregnancy complicated by diabetes mellitus is associated with higher maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality rates. Preconception counseling and treatment are important for the diabetic patient contemplating pregnancy and can reduce the risk of congenital malformations and improve pregnancy outcome. Folate supplementation reduces the incidence of fetal neural tube defects, which occur with greater frequency in fetuses of diabetic mothers.
Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease Up to 90% of pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting during the first trimester of pregnancy. Occasionally, hyperemesis gravidarum requires hospitalization to prevent dehydration, and sometimes parenteral nutrition is required.
Crohn's disease may be associated with exacerbations in the second and third trimesters. Ulcerative colitis is associated with disease exacerbations in the first trimester and during the early postpartum period.
