  • I was privileged to have witnessed the evolution of medical informatics in the United States during its fi rst six decades. Donald A. B. Lindberg, Director of the National Library of Medicine, advised me that documenting this history would be a worthy project since during this period the country moved into a new information era, and it was obvious that computers were having a major infl uence on all of medicine. In this book I address history as a chronological accounting of what I considered to be signifi cant events.

  • This paper reports the first part of a project that aims to develop a knowledge extraction and knowledge discovery system that extracts causal knowledge from textual databases. In this initial study, we develop a method to identify and extract cause-effect information that is explicitly expressed in medical abstracts in the Medline database. A set of graphical patterns were constructed that indicate the presence of a causal relation in sentences, and which part of the sentence represents the cause and which part represents the effect. ...

  • The evolution of technological advances in infrared sensor technology, image processing, “smart” algorithms, knowledge-based databases, and their overall system integration has resulted in new methods of research and use in medical infrared imaging. The development of infrared cameras with focal plane arrays not requiring cooling added a new dimension to this modality. New detector materials with improved thermal sensitivity are now available and production of high-density focal plane arrays (640×480) has been achieved.

  • Modern medicine is characterized by the continuously growing spectrum of improving diagnostic methods and therapeutic processes. It keeps getting more complicated and confusing and therefore also needs more order. The main goal of medical documentation is to provide information for the adequate care of patients. Carefully carried out written records like a patient history, physician indexes, or, more recently, patient databases serve to reach this goal.

  • Over a century ago, with the work of Alexander Graham Bell, the motivation underlying the first use of the telephone in communication had a health-related origin: a doctor attempted to be in contact with his deaf mother and sister. Early developments in electronic patient records took place over 40 years ago through the pioneering work of Ed Hammond and his interest in community and family medicine. Very soon, the European Union will be celebrating a 20-year history of co-financing eHealth research and development initiatives.

  • Several efforts have been made since 1990 to overcome the effort required to maintain curated protein family data- bases by automatically clustering the protein sequence databases using sequence similarity. The general approach is to compute all possible pairwise comparisons, and then cluster them in some fashion, shifting the effort from humans to computers. This otherwise computationally very demanding process has benefited from the introduc- tion of the rapid PSI-BLAST system(Altschul et al., 1997).

  • Oracle Connection Manager is a software component that resides on its own computer, separate from a client or an Oracle database server. It proxies and screens requests for the database server. In addition, it multiplexes database sessions. In its session multiplexing role, Oracle Connection Manager funnels multiple sessions through a single transport protocol connection to a particular destination.

  • Two types of diversions are reported by the water use database: interbasin (transfers that take place between the Great Lakes basin and another watershed) and intrabasin (transfers that take place between one of the Great Lakes watersheds and another); both types can be either incoming or outgoing. Of the two types, interbasin diversions (transfers that take place between the Great Lakes basin and another watershed) have traditionally been of greater interest to water supply managers and the public. Interbasin diversions shown in the tables as a positive number (e.g.

  • Oracle provides for complete media recovery from all possible types of hardware failures, including disk failures. Options are provided so that a database can be completely recovered or partially recovered to a specific point in time. If some datafiles are damaged in a disk failure but most of the database is intact and operational, the database can remain open while the required tablespaces are individually recovered. Therefore, undamaged portions of a database are available for normal use while damaged portions are being recovered. ...

Paris-Sud XI, France {yvon,pz}@limsi.fr Abstract Handling terminology is an important matter in a translation workflow. However, current Machine Translation (MT) systems do not yet propose anything proactive upon tools which assist in managing terminological databases. In this work, we investigate several enhancements to analogical learning and test our implementation on translating medical terms.

  • Almost all protein database search methods use amino acid substitution matrices for scoring, optimizing, and assessing the statistical significance of sequence alignments. Much care and effort has therefore gone into con-structing substitution matrices, and the quality of search results can depend strongly upon the choice of the proper matrix. A long-standing problem has been the comparison of sequences with biased amino acid composi-tions, for which standard substitution matrices are not optimal....

  • In this section, we study operations that, in one way or another, process their data sequentially. Examples include searching on one or more unindexed attributes, creation of bitmaps based on selection conditions, and scalar aggrega- tion. Grouped aggregation can be achieved by a combina- tion of sorting followed by one scalar aggregation per group. Scan-like operations are also used as components of more complex operations that we will discuss in Section 4 and Section 5.
