  • As an editor for Fitness magazine, my job is to be a conduit of information between my readers and the experts (registered dietitians, medical doctors, and researchers). In essence, I’m a translator. You see, most experts speak what I like to call medicalese—a complex, exceedingly tedious language that few outside their professions can understand. Medicalese words can be as long as some sentences, sentences are usually the size of paragraphs, and whole studies—well, let’s just say it takes a lot of coffee to get through some of them....

It is for subjects like nutrition that the British Medical Journal’s ABC series is extremely useful. This book was started when Dr Stephen Lock, previous editor of the BMJ asked me to write a series of weekly articles for an imagined general practitioner, in an unfashionable provincial town who had been taught almost no nutrition at medical school.

Nutritional support, via either enteral or parenteral routes, is used in two main settings: (1) to provide adequate nutritional intake during the recuperative phase of illness or injury, when the patient's ability to ingest or absorb nutrients is impaired, and (2) to support the patient during the systemic response to inflammation, injury, or infection during an extended critical illness. SNS is also used in patients with permanent loss of intestinal length or function.

How do you take fifteen years of medical practice in pathology and ten years of clinical observation utilizing the theories of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, and therapeutic nutrition and meld them into a model of biological understanding and medical practice? The answer is actually quite simple — start from the beginning and build a convincing model based upon sound physics, physiology, pathology, and clinical medicine and see if the model fits the expected outcome.
