  • It is incredible to think that although the founders of medical ethics, such as Hippocrates, published their works more than 2000 years ago, the medical profession, up until now, has not had a basic, universally used, curriculum for the teaching of medical ethics. This first WMA Ethics Manual aims to fill that void. What a privilege it is to introduce it to you! The Manual’s origin dates back to the 51st World Medical Assembly in 1999.

During this period, the number of dialysis patients has continued to increase rapidly to the present fi gure of 257 765 (at the end of 2005), and with surprising increases in the survival rate.

  • Consistent with my long-standing aspiration to become a psychoanalyst, I trained in psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center of Harvard Medical School in the early 1960s and completed a residency there. Then I changed direction. I decided not to obtain psychoanalytic training or even to have a clinical practice. Rather, I spent the next 40 years doing biological research—developing a reductionist approach to learning and memory, first in snails and then in mice.

  • One of the current trends in medical education is to integrate material between the basic science courses of the first two years of medical school and to integrate material between the basic science courses and the clinical departments. Medical students often feel submerged by the flood of information during medical school and attempts to integrate this material are often met with much frustration. The basic premise for this book is to help in the integration of material between the basic science courses of medical school.

  • No official statistics are available for children suffering from school phobia in the UK. However, according to Anxiety Care (see Useful Contacts) the number of children who dislike school, and avoid it whenever possible, is probably more than five per cent of the school age population; but less than one per cent could be genuinely called school phobic. The Royal College of Psychiatrists suggests that between five and ten per cent of children and young people have anxiety problems bad enough to affect their ability to live a normal life....

  • OVER THE PAST DECADE, alternative medical therapies have played an increasingly prominent role in American health care. In the nation’s grocery stores, homeopathic treatments and over-thecounter herbal remedies crowd aisles that were once largely devoted to analgesics, sore throat lozenges, and fruit-flavored, animal-shaped children’s vitamins. Eager to fill their beds and their coffers, hospitals advertise—even celebrate—the inclusion of nontraditional medical practices.

  • In undergraduate medical education there is a trend towards the development of ‘core’ curricula. The aim is to facilitate the teaching of essential and relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes. This contrasts with traditional medical school courses, where the emphasis was on detailed factual knowledge, often with little obvious clinical relevance. In addition, students’ learning is now commonly examined using objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), which again assess the practical use of knowledge, rather than the regurgitation of ‘small print’....
