  • Medicinal chemistry is a discipline at the intersection of chemistry, especially synthetic organic chemistry, and pharmacology and various other biological specialties, where they are involved with design, chemical synthesis and development for market of pharmaceutical agents (drugs). Compounds used in medical applications are most often organic compounds, which are often divided into the broad classes of small organic molecules and biologics, the latter of which are most often medicinal preparations of proteins. Inorganic and organometallic compounds are also useful as drugs.

  • The emerging field of nanotechnology is affirming its increasing importance day by day. In this context fullerenes and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) play an important role. These new allotropic forms of carbon have been discovered in the last two decades, and, since then, they have stimulated the curiosity and interest of physicists and chemists. This book is the first of a new series entitled “Carbon Materials: Chemistry and Physics”, the purpose of which is to analyze the new frontiers of carbon.

  • Spices are high value, export-oriented crops used extensively in food and beverage flavourings, medicines, cosmetics and perfumes. Interest is growing however in the theoretical and practical aspects of the biosynthetic mechanisms of active components in spices as well as the relationship between the biological activity and chemical structure of these secondary metabolites. A wide variety of phenolic substances and amides derived from spices have been found to possess potent chemopreventive, anti-mutagenic, anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties....

  • The discovery of efficacious new human therapeutic agents is one of humanity’s most vital tasks. It is an enormously demanding activity that requires creativity, a vast range of scientific knowledge, and great persistence. It is also an exceedingly expensive activity. In an ideal world, no education would be complete without some exposure to the ways in which new medicines are discovered and developed. For those young people interested in science or medicine, such knowledge is arguably mandatory....

  • This is a book about plant chemistry written by a herbalist with no claims of being a chemist. Having a driving ambition to understand the nature of herbal medicines—in particular what makes them work—I delved head first into the previously alien world of atoms, molecules and bonds. Having learned enough to be engaged to teach the topic to budding herbalists and naturopaths, I set about formalising the teaching notes—the result is the original (1996) edition of this text.

  • It has been an honor and a privilege to chair the committee on the state of science in nuclear medicine. As a diagnostic radiologist, a clinicianscientist, and the chairperson of a large academic radiology department, I have been exposed to the many advances in nuclear medicine and have observed their clinical benefits up close. Participating in this review, however, has allowed me to step back and appreciate the magnitude of the progress that has been achieved, and the crucial role that government funding has played in it.

  • As one of the most important families of non-natural poly-mers with the propensity to form well-defined secondary structures, theb-peptides are attracting increasing attention. The compounds incorporatingb-amino acid residues have found various applications in medicinal chemistry and biochemistry. The conformational pool ofb-peptides com-prises several periodic folded conformations, which can be classified as helices, and nonpolar and polar strands. The latter two are prone to form pleated sheets.
