  • Information technology is poised on the brink of transforming healthcare. IT is entwined with the continuing evolution of the molecular and physical sciences, and rather than dehumanizing us, IT has the potential to continually transform healthcare by the power of its information sharing and processing capabilities. IT particularly has the power to restore good aspects of healthcare based on a personalized and holistic approach, which has been progressively lost, and increasingly so since the Industrial Revolution and the escalating patient - to - physician ratios of the last century...

  • Medicinal chemistry is a discipline at the intersection of chemistry, especially synthetic organic chemistry, and pharmacology and various other biological specialties, where they are involved with design, chemical synthesis and development for market of pharmaceutical agents (drugs). Compounds used in medical applications are most often organic compounds, which are often divided into the broad classes of small organic molecules and biologics, the latter of which are most often medicinal preparations of proteins. Inorganic and organometallic compounds are also useful as drugs.

  • It is not so far from now, although it is just the end of the XX century, the time when we discussed outlooks of the use of biotechnologies in medicine and pharmacy. These hopes were connected mainly with new microbiological products and new materials (polymers) for pharmaceutics, biomedicine and organ transplantation. Now in the XXI century, we are much more enthusiastic about outlooks of nanotechnologies for our life and environment.

  • When the price of Ginseng advanced some years ago hundreds engaged in the business who knew little or nothing of farming, plant raising and horticulture. That they largely failed is not to be wondered at. Later many began in a small way and succeeded. Many of these were farmers and gardeners. Others were men who had hunted, trapped and gathered "seng" from boyhood. They therefore knew something of the peculiarities of Ginseng. It is from the experience of these men that this work is largely made up--writings of those who are in the business.

  • The impact of biomarkers in present day health care system, health management and healthy life is enormous. Clinicians need them for diagnosis, prognosis, effect of therapeutic intervention, and most importantly, for early detection of a disease. Pharmaceutical industries need them for new drug discovery and drug efficiency test. Regulatory authorities need them for testing toxicity and environmental impact. Epidemiologists need them for population screening and risk factor determination.

  • The creative and innovative ethic of American medicine is legend and has contributed fundamentally to the breadth, depth, and pace of advances in our capacity for diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury. Indeed, the number of new pharmaceuticals, biologics, medical devices, and healthcare services introduced into American healthcare settings and marketplaces substantially exceeds the capacity to know the circumstances under which a particular intervention is best applied.

  • In many countries, medicine is at present facing urgent political and economic calls for reform. These socioeconomic pressures notwithstanding, pharmacotherapy has always been an integral part of the health care system and will remain so in the future. Well-founded knowledge of the preventive and therapeutic value of drugs is a sine qua non for the successful treatment of patients entrusting themselves to a physician or pharmacist. Because of the plethora of proprietary medicines and the continuous influx of new pharmaceuticals, the drug market is dif cult to survey and hard to understand.

  • This paper reviews current marketing practices in the pharmaceutical sector, examining both consumer and doctor-oriented promotion. It presents examples of marketing practices and their impact on consumer and doctor behaviour. It identifies negative impacts of these practices which include misleading advertising, disease mongering and escalating costs. It goes on to argue the need for an independently-monitored code of practice for marketers in the pharmaceutical sector and a greater degree of consumer education for both end-users and those prescribing drugs.
